Grants and Contributions
About this information
In June 2016, as part of the Open Government Action Plan, the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat (TBS) committed to increasing the transparency and usefulness of grants and contribution data and subsequently launched the Guidelines on the Reporting of Grants and Contributions Awards, effective April 1, 2018.
The rules and principles governing government grants and contributions are outlined in the Treasury Board Policy on Transfer Payments. Transfer payments are transfers of money, goods, services or assets made from an appropriation to individuals, organizations or other levels of government, without the federal government directly receiving goods or services in return, but which may require the recipient to provide a report or other information subsequent to receiving payment. These expenditures are reported in the Public Accounts of Canada. The major types of transfer payments are grants, contributions and \'other transfer payments\'.
Included in this category, but not to be reported under proactive disclosure of awards, are (1) transfers to other levels of government such as Equalization payments as well as Canada Health and Social Transfer payments. (2) Grants and contributions reallocated or otherwise redistributed by the recipient to third parties; and (3) information that would normally be withheld under the Access to Information Act and the Privacy Act.

Teams In Extreme Environments - Exploring Autonomy, Motivation, and Stress (TE3AMS)
15FASTB12
The objective of this project entitled "" Teams In Extreme Environments: Exploring Autonomy, Motivation, and Stress (TE3AMS)"" is to evaluate human behaviors in polar environment. This study assesses how individual factors such as coping, universal values, and perception of stress influence team level factors such as perception of autonomy, team perspective, and team resilience in polar environment.

This project entitled "" Actuated-Reset Shockless Hold Down & Release Mechanism "" has the following objective (s):
MDA proposes to undertake the technology development of a Hold-Down and Release Mechanism (HDRM) for the stowage of satellite and spacecraft appendages during launch that addresses two capability gaps currently encountered on all market offerings, namely:
• The ability to be easily reset on the spacecraft during ground operations or on-orbit for re-stowage of hardware.
• Near-zero shock loads upon release.
This innovative solution will eliminate the current need for replacement or refurbishment of the HDRM actuators after every use, and enable the development of higher performance, lighter payload structures that do not need to withstand high local shock values.

This project entitled "" Satellite Refuelling Tool and Next Generation Robotic Joint Technology Research and Development "" has the following objective (s):
The MDA's proposed R&D project is the next stage in the development of Canada's on orbit servicing capabilities and technologies and the next generation of exploration missions. It leverages the technical foundation previously created through CSA's Next Generation Canadarm (NGC) program, and continues the technology development in two key areas, so as to advance the TRL and retire risks:
Design and testing of the NGC Refueling Tool to address remaining technological unknowns, including full compatibility with client fill/drain valves and tool state sensing. This development will complete the preliminary design and full functionality of the tool.
Cold temperature testing of Harmonic Drives, using load, speed, and temperature conditions consistent with on-orbit robotic applications, to address the technological unknowns of efficiency and lubrication performance in these scenarios.

This project entitled "" High-Fidelity Rover Missions at Mars Analogue Sites "" has the following objective (s):
An international team made of Canadian scientists and students will investigate five (5) Mars analog sites on Earth (two (2) in Canada) that have similarities to Martian environment.
The aim is to simulate High-Fidelity Rover Mars Missions whose rely on rock samples' collection and their return to Earth. Canadian students will be involved in all aspects of the missions, from planning to execution as well as further sample and data analysis. They will also work in close collaboration with Canadian industrial partners to advance the state-of-the-art instruments development that could potentially be used on future missions to other planets.
The project will help training the next generation of Canadian students in all aspects of Mars exploration, paving the way for Canada to increase its involvement in Mars exploration and the search for life beyond Earth.

NSERC/MDA Senior Industrial Research Chair in Synthetic Aperture Radar Technologies, Techniques and Applications
16UNIRCSFU
This project entitled "" NSERC/MDA Senior Industrial Research Chair in Synthetic Aperture Radar Technologies, Techniques and Applications "" has the following objective (s):
The Simon Fraser Chair is a partnership between the industry (MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates Ltd - MDA), the academia (Simon Fraser University) and the Government of Canada through the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) along with professor who holds the Research Chair.
The main goal addresses critical training and research needs in Earth imagery analysis using synthetic aperture radar (SAR) technologies with a focus on scientific and operational applications.
The Chair will generate job-ready graduates through a work-integrated learning approach involving internships and contribute tangible outcomes that will support CSA's stated priorities and is anticipated to lead to a world-class Centre of Excellence in SAR.

This project entitled "" HTS Antenna Technology Second Generation "" has the following objective (s):
The proposed multi-feed per beam technology will represent a useful complement to the current single feed per beam Multi-beam antenna technology at MDA, as it offers a reduction of the number of antenna apertures by a factor of two. This results in significant antenna accommodation benefits by allowing more antennas to be installed on a given spacecraft. This new industrial capability will therefore result in significant antenna cost reduction as a result of the elimination of two of the four reflectors currently used in most multi-beam antennas. It will also be possible to use the freed up volume to add more revenue generating antennas, which will contribute to Iowering the cost to the operators and ultimately the cost per bit to the consumers. The proposed technology will also enable MDA to better respond to the national and international communications market needs by offering higher capacity systems through the use of V-band gateways.
