The applicant proposes to bring together 20 international academics, military, and government personnel, and a host of members from the Defence Team for a 3-day seminar. The event will explore operational and strategic design in complex environments such as grey zone conflict and hybrid warfare, and will use animation procedures (i.e. System Operation Design methodology) to translate the tacit knowledge of Generals into tangible knowledge.

The applicant is seeking funding for a workshop to co-design an education platform that will facilitate the instruction and dissemination of a common, agnostic design theory, to ensure allied commanders can speak and collaborate with each other using a ‘common language.' With the development of an adapted digital platform, the organizers will develop a consistent and sustainable design theory that will allow Canada to train partners and other countries and their militaries so that they can adapt to emerging forms of hybrid warfare.

A two-day conference focused on international security, maritime security, developments in military aviation, and diversity and inclusion in French speaking militaries, among other topics. The first day will focus on international relations and the second on international security. The workshop plans to engage military, academics, students and the public.

A five-month (February-July 2020) Fellowship with the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) Defense College based in Rome, Italy to provide research support on defence and security issues related to NATO and Canada.

A project to identify current and future challenges in deterring, detecting, allocating and responding to social media information operations. It proposes to draw on the experiences and practices of other countries and sectors to improve the capabilities of the Canadian Armed Forces. The project proposes a report containing the research results, the planning of a conference on the subject, as well as the development of a machine learning algorithm to analyze misinformation campaigns.

The GNWT will design the Runway Extension to territorial standards to a design meeting the requirements of both GNWT snd DND.

A two-day event focused on cyber-security, hybrid warfare, and political interference. This event will take place in two parts: 1) a workshop that brings together researchers and practitioners at the forefront of hybrid conflicts, cyber-strategy, cybersecurity and information warfare, and 2) a 72-hour hackathon involving a competition between approx. 50 IT security specialists on a challenge related to the Canadian electoral process.

The applicant proposes to analyze the lessons learned from Operation Nanook and Operation Arctic Shield related to SAR and emergency response capabilities. The applicant proposes to host a two-day workshop in Ottawa that would engage Arctic and Antarctic practitioners and experts from Canada, U.S, Denmark, Greenland and Australia in a discussion of the lessons learned, best practices, capabilities, and evolving technologies.

The applicant is requesting funding to develop position papers, hold a conference in Ottawa in February 2020 and publish a green paper, relating to the security environment in the Asia-Pacific and its implications for Canadian defence. It would also look at how the US, Australia, Canada, Korea and New Zealand can cooperate to advance peace and security in the Asia-Pacific.

The proposed project is a systematic examination of changing gender relations within the CAF by focusing on the different phases of the military career cycle, to assess policy initiatives that have been implemented in Canada and elsewhere, to understand the conditions under which these are successful in recruiting, retaining and better integrating women in the military.
