Case studies, innovation and applied research

ECONSEC will conduct research on economic security and corporate espionage – with a particular focus on businesses and universities – as a key element of national security, Canadian defence and Canadian prosperity. ECONSEC intends to map and identify this new threat reality and connect The Department of National Defence and the Canadian Armed Forces (DND/CAF) with leading experts to inform the policy debate.

CTA is a non-profit of Canada with expertise in semi-active suspensions systems and advanced engineering for mobility. This project’s objective is to deliver an innovative damper design for wheeled extraterrestrial vehicles, using friction that can be modulated. This system replaces traditional fluid based damper elements that are not well suited for the harsh condition of space exploration. By using algorithms to modulate friction in real-time as a function of inputs such as speed, the system can improve the mobility of rovers, allow operation at faster speeds and improve systems lifespan. The project includes detailed design, manufacturing and characterization of a damper prototype in a laboratory. The disruptive technology could position Canada as a leader in advanced rover mobility, filling an important technological gap that overly complicated smart suspensions seem to overlook.

This project aims to develop an AI-powered online platform using high-resolution satellite imagery to rapidly detect and monitor leafy spurge, a highly invasive plant threatening Canada's agriculture and biodiversity, mapping populations and tracking changes over time to support decision-making.

This project aims to map climate strongholds for migratory birds in Canada and their links to U.S. and Latin American sites, then uses satellite data and Indigenous knowledge to assess conditions breeding climate strongholds in the Hudson Bay Lowlands and connected nonbreeding areas.

This project aims to leverage Earth observations from satellites, drones, and ground-based technologies (e.g., mobile phones) to improve the ability to quantify, map, and monitor biodiversity in the complex mosaic of land use and land management of agricultural landscapes.
