March 2021 - Yemen currently faces the world’s largest humanitarian crisis, with over 24 million people in need of humanitarian assistance. The conflict and collapsing economy have pushed over 16 million people to suffer from acute food insecurity, and over 3.6 million people have been displaced since the beginning of the crisis in 2015. Essential service provisions collapsed, including critical water, sanitation, hygiene (WASH) and health services, increasing the risk of disease outbreaks such as cholera, dengue fever and diphtheria. Women and girls are disproportionately affected by the lack of access to essential services and face an increased risk of sexual and gender-based violence due to the crisis.

With GAC’s support, this project provides a multi-sectoral response targeting an estimated 35,868 people in the Al-Dhale'e and Dhamar governorates. Project activities include: (1) improving gender-responsive water, sanitation and hygiene services and facilities; (2) providing emergency cash assistance and non-food items, (3) increasing access to safe drinking water.

This project seeks to enhance equitable health systems responding to and managing the long-term health needs of targeted vulnerable communities. This includes Tonj North County, Warrap State, South Sudan and Tulo Woreda, West Hararghe, Oromia Region, Ethiopia. Project activities include: (1) establishing a Health Training Fund (HTF) and supporting the diversification of funding for student loans in Ethiopia; (2) conducting awareness-raising sessions on sexual and reproductive health and rights conducted for women and girls; (3) supporting health centres to provide sexual and reproductive health (SRH). This includes access to contraception and family planning, mental health, prevention and treatment of STIs, safe abortion and post-abortion care and access to youth-friendly health services; and (4) providing capacity building training to health care and nutrition center staff including community members on basic emergency care, maternal, infant, and young child nutrition (MIYCN), STI prevention, Basic Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (BEmONC), integrated community case management of common childhood illnesses (ICCM), wash for nutrition, and nutritional screening. The project benefits 75,000 rights-holders including men, women, girls, boys and people with disabilities in both Ethiopia and South Sudan.

According to the United Nations, an estimated 15.3 million people need humanitarian assistance in Syria, with over 6 million internally displaced persons.

With GAC’s support, Islamic Relief aims to reduce suffering and increase and maintain human dignity of 127,634 individuals, particularly women and girls, in internally displaced people (IDP) camps and towns in the Governorates of Idlib and Aleppo in Northwest Syria.

With Global Affairs Canada’s support, Islamic Relief Canada aims to reduce suffering and increase and maintain human dignity, particularly of women and girls.

With GAC’s multi-year support, Islamic Relief Canada is providing emergency water, hygiene, and livelihoods support to up to 59,500 of the most vulnerable conflict-affected people, particularly women, in the Dhamar and Al Dhale governorates of Yemen.

However, there will also be growing numbers of people returning to areas no longer under the control of Daesh who will also need assistance to help restart their lives.

With GAC’s support, Islamic Relief Canada is contributing by meeting the health, psychosocial and protection needs of vulnerable Iraqi women and girls affected by sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV).

An estimated 6.4 million people need humanitarian aid because of the floods.

With GAC’s support, Islamic Relief Canada is working to save lives and help reduce the suffering of flood-affected people.

Through the application of national and local priorities, the CSJ program seeks to provide youth who face barriers to employment with access to work opportunities. Funded employers must demonstrate that they are providing quality work experiences for youth that provide opportunities to develop and improve their skills. The CSJ program is delivered by the Department of ESD.
