December 2024 – The humanitarian impact of the conflict in northern Ethiopia from 2020 to 2022 continues to be felt. The Tigray region suffered significant damage, with much of its healthcare and water infrastructure damaged or destroyed. Many people remain displaced from their homes and basic services remain limited for much of the population.

With GAC’s support, CARE Canada helps provide a multi-sectoral humanitarian response to critical needs in Tigray. Project activities include: (1) restoring water points and sanitation facilities; (2) supporting local health facilities; and (3) providing protection services to mitigate the increased risk of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) for vulnerable women and girls.

November 2024 - Political instability, conflict and natural disasters have left more than 25 million people across the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) in need of humanitarian assistance. Populations face insecurity, malnutrition, and limited access to clean water and adequate sanitation. Also, hunger, displacement and conflict increase the risk of sexual and gender-based violence, especially for the most vulnerable.

With GAC’s support, the Mennonite Central Committee provides a multi-sectoral response targeting displaced and conflict-affected people in North Kivu, DRC. Project activities include: (1) the provision of multi-purpose cash transfers (2) distribution of emergency non-food items and (3) the provision of protection services to mitigate the increased risk of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) for vulnerable women and girls.

This project aims to improve access to sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services for women and girls in the Philippines. Project activities include: (1) improving the availability and use of comprehensive SRH services in non-profit, community-based clinics; (2) training community health volunteers and teachers to deliver SRH and comprehensive sexual education information in communities and schools; and (3) strengthening women’s rights and community-based organizations and networks to advocate for policies related to SRH financing and comprehensive sexual education at the national and local levels. This project benefits approximately 100,000 individuals, particularly women, girls, and lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and intersex plus individuals living in disaster-prone and urban-poor communities.

This project seeks to promote the protection of human rights of men, women, girls, and boys across all regions of Ukraine, including territory occupied by the Russian Federation. Project activities include: (1) enhancing monitoring in areas under Russian occupation; (2) improving conflict-related sexual violence case documentation and support to accountability mechanisms; (3) preventing civilian harm through detailed reporting on the conduct of hostilities; (4) improving the protection of prisoners of war and civilian detainees; and (5) providing early warning on violations in occupied territories.

December 2024 – In situations of humanitarian crisis, women and girls often bear the brunt of the impact. This is frequently due to societal norms that deprioritize their needs or to the breakdown of local protection mechanisms increasing their vulnerability to sexual and gender-based violence. This is particularly true in situations of conflict or insecurity such as those in Burkina Faso, Chad, Ethiopia, Somalia, and South Sudan.

With GAC’s support, Oxfam Canada and Quebec help provide a multi-sectoral humanitarian response to address sexual and gender-based violence within crisis-affected communities in Burkina Faso, Chad, Ethiopia, Somalia, and South Sudan. Project activities include: (1) restoring water points and sanitation facilities, with an eye towards improved safety; (2) providing sexual and reproductive health services; (3) granting unconditional cash to vulnerable households to reduce negative coping strategies; and (4) providing protection services to mitigate the increased risk of sexual and g

December 2024 – The southern Africa region is facing prolonged severe drought conditions leaving an estimated 29 million people in the four most-affected countries (Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia, and Zimbabwe) in need of humanitarian assistance.

With GAC’s support, Oxfam Canada helps provide a multi-sectoral humanitarian response to drought-related needs in Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. Project activities include: (1) restoring water points and sanitation facilities in drought-affected communities; (2) providing unconditional cash grants or food vouchers to food insecure households; and (3) strengthening local protection services to mitigate the increased risk of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) for vulnerable women and girls.

February 2026- Sudan is facing one of the world’s most severe and complex humanitarian crises, driven by armed conflict, mass displacement, economic collapse, weakened state institutions, recurring disease outbreaks, escalating natural disasters and climate shocks. The ongoing conflict has resulted in the largest internally displaced population globally (over 7.3 million) and the collapse of livelihoods, markets, and services across the country. Over 30 million people (more than half the population), of whom 48% are children, are in need of humanitarian assistance.

With GAC’s support, Plan International Canada helps provide life-saving multi-purpose cash assistance (MPCA), child protection support and water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) services to vulnerable refugees, internally displaced persons (IDPs) and host communities in Ouaddaï in Chad, Upper Nile in South Sudan, and North Darfur and and North Kordofan in Sudan. Project activities include: (1) providing urgent child case protection management; (2) establishing and operating child- and adolescent-friendly spaces; (3) establishing and training community-based child protection mechanisms; (4) providing multi-purpose cash assistance to the families of children and adolescents with acute needs; (5) rehabilitating boreholes to provide clean and safe drinking water; (6) establishing fully functioning and well-maintained WASH facilities; (7) launching hygiene promotion campaigns; and (8) providing WASH-related non-food items and hygiene kits to children, adolescent girls and boys and their households.

October 2024 – Afghanistan continues to experience deteriorating humanitarian conditions, with high levels of need cutting across all provinces and sectors. In 2024, an estimated 23.7 million people require humanitarian assistance due to the impacts of many years of conflict, chronic food insecurity, displacement, broad economic crisis, and climatic events.

With GAC’s support, War Child Canada provides humanitarian assistance to vulnerable communities in Afghanistan. Project activities include: (1) providing health care services to women and children; (2) providing psychosocial support to women and children and other community members; (3) providing protection services; and (4) distributing essential relief items.
