Grants and Contributions
About this information
In June 2016, as part of the Open Government Action Plan, the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat (TBS) committed to increasing the transparency and usefulness of grants and contribution data and subsequently launched the Guidelines on the Reporting of Grants and Contributions Awards, effective April 1, 2018.
The rules and principles governing government grants and contributions are outlined in the Treasury Board Policy on Transfer Payments. Transfer payments are transfers of money, goods, services or assets made from an appropriation to individuals, organizations or other levels of government, without the federal government directly receiving goods or services in return, but which may require the recipient to provide a report or other information subsequent to receiving payment. These expenditures are reported in the Public Accounts of Canada. The major types of transfer payments are grants, contributions and \'other transfer payments\'.
Included in this category, but not to be reported under proactive disclosure of awards, are (1) transfers to other levels of government such as Equalization payments as well as Canada Health and Social Transfer payments. (2) Grants and contributions reallocated or otherwise redistributed by the recipient to third parties; and (3) information that would normally be withheld under the Access to Information Act and the Privacy Act.

In situ Detection and Characterization of microplastics in the ocean—model building
1015268
The project focuses on developing numerical models (computational fluid mechanics and acoustophoresis) to predict the dynamics of plastic particles in water in the presence of acoustic forcing. The models to be developed as part of the project will identify and quantify the impact of acoustic forcing on the trajectory of microplastics in a confined environment, in order to control their trajectory under a wide range of conditions (temperature, current velocity, etc.).

Simulating non-equilibrium thermodynamics on a quantum computer with applications in generative artificial intelligence
1021398
The project investigates the applicability and performance of fault-tolerant quantum computers in solving stochastic and partial differential equations motivated by generative modelling in artificial intelligence (AI). These differential equations arise as models of non-equilibrium dynamics in dissipative physical systems and provide the foundations of recent revolutionary AI models such as diffusion models. More generally, the project views the associated computational tasks as transports of ensemble states in stochastic thermodynamics and compares the performance of quantum algorithms with the fundamental limits of efficient generation of target ensembles by any machine, whether they are unitary and closed, or dissipative and open, quantum or classical, and artificial or biological.

Imagery for the in-situ detection and characterization of ocean microplastics
1021588
The aim of this Project is to support the development of an instrument that can be deployed in the marine environment and can detect, measure the size of and characterize ocean microplastics in situ and in real time, to improve the measurement and monitoring of this type of ocean pollution.

Benchmarking of novel materials and processes for EV lithium-ion batteries using life cycle assessment.
1021821
First, an LCA-based environmental assessment is required for anticipated battery and battery material production processes in Canada to establish a baseline for benchmarking, but this has not been previously conducted. Second, an early stage LCA framework is required for the evaluation of new battery materials and processes proposed under the NRC’s Critical Battery Materials Initiative (CBMI). Third, the evaluation of both anticipated large scale battery production and new materials and processes requires Canadian background life cycle inventory (LCI) datasets including electricity, fuels, basic raw materials, chemicals, waste processing and water production.

Scalable high efficiency high rate near-unity fidelity photon pair sources for entanglement distribution.
1022082
The project aims to develop a novel, deterministic entangled photon source based on quantum dots in nanowires with enhanced performance beyond state-of-the-art for distributed quantum sensing, higher resolution imaging and long-distance entanglement distribution. The project team will design and fabricate a broadband nanowire optical cavity around a single quantum dot to increase the emission rate beyond 100 MHz, enhance the pair extraction efficiency 100-fold while maintaining near-perfect entanglement fidelity and overcome the major problem of charge noise in semiconductors for achieving high single-photon indistinguishability.
