This grant will support ARK to strengthen the migration management capacity of Nigeria through technical assistance in the areas of strategic communication to deter human trafficking and irregular migration.

The objective of this project is to provide an intern with experience in a business that imports Fair Trade Coffee and in representing the brand through beverage service and tastings.

The APOCEB initiative targets coastal communities in Cacheu park in Guinea Bissau, the Tristao islands in the Republic of Guinea, Niumi National Park in Gambia and the Abéné marine protected area in Senegal. The initiative aims to improve the economic, social and environmental development of these communities in a sustainable way, as well as the living, working and health conditions of its residents and the resilience of vulnerable populations to climate change. Ultimately, this project will benefit the 67,568 residents of the villages targeted in the four countries.

The three key areas of focus are as follows: (1) Protecting and restoring mangroves and implementing a management plan for resources and renewable energy; (2) Enhancing and strengthening value chains, mariculture and tourism with waste management and the circular economy; (3) Promoting gender equality, the rights of the most vulnerable groups and youth employment in the economic governance of their activities in a climate change context. C’est-à-dire qu’APOCEB vise à commercialiser sans intermédiaires des produits à forte valeur ajoutée, exploités durablement pour permettre aux communautés visées de devenir des références sous régionales en matière d’exploitation et de valorisation durable des ressources. Une autre des innovations a trait à l’égalité des genres qui est définie dans le cadre du projet APOCEB par l’égalité des chances, entre autres dans le cadre d’activités d’économie circulaire. Cette composante de l’initiative permet aux jeunes femmes de bénéficier des mêmes droits et opportunités que les jeunes hommes. Pour garantir l’égalité des chances, les leaders féminins feront partie des comités de sélection aux côtés des experts locaux du projet. Les jeunes femmes seront notamment accompagnées et soutenues pour déposer leur candidature afin de limiter les effets de la pression sociale. The initiative aims to improve scientific knowledge on the various resources with a view to helping the communities with their sustainable management and development and collecting specific data about the areas in order to develop a predictive climate change model with the goal of ensuring the communities are better adapted.

The project includes the following activities: (1) developing a specific training plan to equip women in choosing revenue-generating activities to be undertaken in a changing climate change context; (2) collecting field data in cooperation with women and young women to identify natural resources with a high potential; (3) selecting 20 young people per country to become climate ambassadors; (4) ensuring the reforestation of the mangroves and monitoring the replanted areas; (5) defining a circular economy model linked to the blue economy in the form of a target focus group across the various communities; (6) ensuring initial and ongoing training for women and young women involved in the processing units and sending out the units in the communities; and (7) developing a range of high value-added products that are targeted to consumer demand.

CEGEP Gaspésie et des Îles is carrying out this project in partnership with the Institut Universitaire des Pêches et d'Aquaculture de Dakar [fisheries and aquaculture university institute of Dakar] (IUPA) in Senegal, the Institut de la Biodiversité et des Aires protégées [biodiversity and protected areas institute] (IBAP) in Guinea Bissau, the Centre National des Sciences Halieutiques de Boussoura [Boussoura fisheries science national centre] (CNSHB) in Guinea and the Department of Parks and Wildlife Management (DPWM) in Gambia.

Sustainable feminist peace requires a challenge to the gendered root causes of violence. This project works locally, nationally and globally by building alliances between women peace activists and men allies and creating critical space for solidarity dialogues. It also supports evidence-based research that aims to contribute to a deeper understanding of gendered power relations and how these relations influence, and are influenced by violence, armed conflict, and war. Finally, the outcomes from the research and dialogues work to inform advocacy in human rights bodies, the disarmament fora, and Women Peace and Security debates to strengthen international gender conflict analysis and the Women Peace and Security Agenda.

The project aims to contribute to the diversion of plastic pollution in rivers, deltas and oceans at global and national levels using a circular economy approach (a regenerative approach to production and consumption, in which products and materials are redesigned, recovered and reused to reduce environmental impacts).

The Global Plastic Action Partnership (GPAP) seeks to reduce the growth in global plastic leakage around the world by developing country-level strategies to reduce waste across the plastics life cycle. On a global level, GPAP provides a platform and convening mechanism for the emerging range of initiatives seeking to tackle plastics pollution. At the national level, GPAP works collaboratively with governments, businesses, civil society and other key stakeholders in several countries to: (1) bring together public and private leaders; (2) develop national action and investment plans to address plastic waste in the economy; and (3) align investors to advance action in support of these plans.

Project activities include: (1) organizing alignment workshops with non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and academia working on metrics and standards for measuring plastics waste pollution; (2) conducting GPAP engagement activities to inform public and private sector financing mechanisms on plastic initiatives in target countries; and (3) organizing outreach events to ensure that plastics-related policies receive the endorsement of government agencies and NGOs focused on women’s issues in target countries.

The project aims to benefit Indonesia, Ghana and Vietnam through the development of national plans to combat plastic waste, with the opportunity for greater engagement regionally in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Africa and among small islands states in the Pacific and the Caribbean.

Project activities include: (1) providing training programs to women on advocacy and leadership skills,on project design and implementation; (2) organizing community sensitizations to address negative gender and social norms; (3) supporting women’s group business opportunities; (4) conducting knowledge sharing to help formulate better business planning and execution; and (5) organizing workshops on gender mainstreaming in planning and service delivery.

Through contribution agreements, the CFLI provides financial assistance to cover all or part of the costs of relatively modest projects conceived, designed and implemented mainly by local authorities, institutions or organizations. The program aims to assist in the advocacy of Canada’s values and interests, and to strengthen Canada’s bilateral relations with foreign countries and their civil societies.

UNDERSTANDING MICROGRAVITY-INDUCED BONE LOSS THROUGH IN VIVO SIMULATED MICROGRAVITY EXPERIMENTS
Following a space mission, astronauts experience severe bone thinning and increased risks of fracture when back on Earth. This anomaly is due to microgravity exposure. The aim of this study is to reproduce and expose fish larvae to a simulated microgravity on Earth, and to analyse the effects on the cells of the skeleton. Fish bones strongly resemble human bones in structure. They utilize similar cell types to secrete, mineralize and degrade bone matrix, and similar signaling pathways for cell-cell communication. Thus, fish are a good model to understand the causes underlying the microgravity-induced bone fragility observed in astronauts

EXTRACTING NOVEL INFORMATION FROM CANADIAN SPACE LIFE SCIENCE ASTRONAUT DATA
The current project will provide an opportunity for young, highly talented Canadian scientists to engage in data mining exercise that will leverage data collected from the CSA-supported projects BP Reg and Vascular. Novel hypotheses developed since these original studies can utilize spaceflight data to provide insights into blood pressure regulation and the effects of stiffer arteries on blood flow to the brain. Our results set the stage for applications of the CSA Bio-Monitor and advanced ultrasound technology to benefit astronauts in future long-duration exploration missions; and, they open opportunities to benefit health in the aging population on Earth.
