Grants and Contributions
About this information
In June 2016, as part of the Open Government Action Plan, the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat (TBS) committed to increasing the transparency and usefulness of grants and contribution data and subsequently launched the Guidelines on the Reporting of Grants and Contributions Awards, effective April 1, 2018.
The rules and principles governing government grants and contributions are outlined in the Treasury Board Policy on Transfer Payments. Transfer payments are transfers of money, goods, services or assets made from an appropriation to individuals, organizations or other levels of government, without the federal government directly receiving goods or services in return, but which may require the recipient to provide a report or other information subsequent to receiving payment. These expenditures are reported in the Public Accounts of Canada. The major types of transfer payments are grants, contributions and \'other transfer payments\'.
Included in this category, but not to be reported under proactive disclosure of awards, are (1) transfers to other levels of government such as Equalization payments as well as Canada Health and Social Transfer payments. (2) Grants and contributions reallocated or otherwise redistributed by the recipient to third parties; and (3) information that would normally be withheld under the Access to Information Act and the Privacy Act.

Lorama Bio-adhesive replacing formaldehyde-based adhesives for wood composite board production
1029531
Lorama is pleased to announce that due to SDTC support, it is able to bring its latest innovation in the area of environmentally sound chemicals to market on an accelerated basis. In this project, Lorama has perfected a new range of adhesives, based upon its proprietary polysaccharide resin chemistry, that technically and economically replace toxic, carcinegenic, and fossil fuel based adhesives currently in widespread use, inclusive of house construction and furniture (engineered wood products) applications. In addition to protecting the public from such hazards, elimination of these traditional adhesives has the potential to reduce GHG emissions by up to 25000 kilo-tons of GHG. The replacement Lorama products are entirely plant-based materials, fully renewable, pose no health hazard, and offer Canada the opportunity to play an important part in reducing the environmental footprint of this adhesive class, while adding hundreds of Millions of $'s to our GNP.

Improved Forest Management Technology for Increased Carbon Sequestration, and Reduction in Herbicide Use
1029539
Mikro-Tek is a carbon project developer and supplier of forest carbon offset credits. Since 1990 they have applied natural fungal organisms to nursery seedlings in order to enhance nutrient and moisture uptake of trees after planting. This results in an increase in both biomass growth and carbon sequestration.
Early increase in seedling growth also helps a forest reach free-to-grow status quicker and therefore may provide a viable alternative to herbicidal spraying of reforestation sites on Crown land across Canada. The goals of this project are two-fold: to increase carbon sequestration on reforestation sites in the boreal forest, and to assess the technology as an alternative to herbicide applications.

Increase condition assessment platform’s automation capacity from 50% to 90%+ using deep learning models, single cloud architecture, and demonstration sites.
1029546
Niricson is developing a proprietary cloud-based damage assessment platform-AUTOSPEX to help asset owners inspect and manage their assets (Dams, Bridges, Nuclear Power Plants etc.) faster, cost-effectively, accurately, and safely.
With the proposed project, Niricson plans to automate the big data processing from 50% to over 90%. This will allow more asset owners to collect and process their assets data frequently allowing building predictive maintenance models, extending the service life of their assets, and hence, reducing the CO2 emissions significantly.

Photonics Integrated Circuits-Based Inertial Measurement Unit with Enhanced Precision and Reliability for Autonomous Vehicles
1029550
Based on Photonics Integrated Circuits (PIC) technology, OSCP is developing the next generation of Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs) for Autonomous Vehicles (AVs) navigation application. Unlike MEMS-based IMUs, OSCP’s IMU can reliably navigate a vehicle with Centimeter level of position accuracy even in the absence of GNSS for several minutes. OSCP’s IMUs are also both dramatically higher-performance and much less sensitive to environmental effects such as Thermal Drift, Vibration Induced Noise, and EMI.
As compared to the high end IMUs such as Fiber-Optics Gyroscope (FOG)-based, OSCP’s IMU not only delivers the same performance but in a compact, low power, low-cost footprint, thanks to its on-chip integrated CMOS compatible technology. As a +30 years old technology, FOGs are specifically designed for Aerospace application and as a result they are not scalable and therefore super expensive for AVs applications. By integrating all optical components on the same chip, OSCP is delivering a scalable, revolutionary IMU with extraordinary performance at a low cost for AVs market.
Addressing $45B total available market by 2032, and with an order of magnitude less power consumption than FOGs, OSCP's IMUs contributes to hundreds of kilotonnes of CO2 reduction over the next 10 years.

Unlocking the Latent Flexibility of the Electricity Grid
1029556
Peak Power is a Toronto-based climate tech company that enables contributors to climate change to be a part of the solution. Peak designs and delivers AI-powered software that transforms buildings from static energy consumers into dynamic, revenue-generating assets. Their technology optimizes commercial buildings through the intelligent management of energy use, energy storage, and EV grid integration.
Peak Power is building a distributed energy resource aggregation (DERA), that has the potential to be a catalyst for deep decarbonization within the buildings, energy, and transportation sectors. The DERA will unlock the trapped latent flexibility capacity and environmental potential in these demand-side resources. The DERA aims to be the foundation of smarter and cleaner cities across North America and globally.

pH7 PGM Green Processing Plant
1029558
pH7 has created an innovative process for extracting and refining of critical metals that will enable the transition to renewable energy in an environmentally and economically sustainable way.
pH7 closed loop process applies organic, inorganic, and electro chemistries to reduce the environmental impact of the mining and mineral processes. This disruptive process enables efficient metal extraction from low grade resources or difficult substrates which are uneconomical or infeasible by current pyro or hydro metallurgy approaches.
This project will grow the industry's capacity to extract PGM from end-of-life materials to meet the growing demands of the green, circular and hydrogen economies.
