Grants and Contributions

• The Barer-Flood Prize is named in honour of the leadership, vision and innovative contributions of the first two Scientific Directors of CIHR’s Institute of Health Services and Policy Research (CIHR-IHSPR), Morris Barer and Colleen Flood. In their roles as Scientific Directors, Dr. Barer and Dr. Flood made tremendous contributions towards advancing the field of health services and policy research in Canada, building a community of world-class researchers, and designing innovative new programs that foster evidence-informed decision making and improved health and health care for Canadians.
• The Barer-Flood Prize is intended to recognize and support the research excellence of Canadian Senior-Career Investigators working within the mandate of IHSPR. Health services and policy research with equity-focused contributions is encouraged.
• This prize is a supplemental grant to support research and/or knowledge mobilization and must be used according to the CIHR Application Administration Guide. The prize is non-renewable.

• The CIHR Institute of Musculoskeletal Health and Arthritis (CIHR-IMHA) will fund applications that are determined relevant to its mandate and research priority areas as described below:
• IMHA mandate areas
o Pain
o Oral Health

• The CIHR Institute of Nutrition, Metabolism and Diabetes (CIHR-INMD) will provide funding for applications in which the objectives and aims are determined to be largely and directly relevant to the INMD mandate as described below:
o CIHR-INMD supports research to enhance health in relation to diet, digestion, excretion, and metabolism; and to address causes, prevention, screening, diagnosis, treatment, support systems, and palliation for a wide range of conditions and problems associated with hormone, digestive system, kidney, and liver.
• These grants afford principal investigators an opportunity to resubmit their research proposal without the loss of momentum, staff or trainees.

Patient-Oriented Research (POR), which is foundational to evidence-informed health care, refers to a continuum of research that engages patients, including People with Lived and Living Experience (PWLLE), as partners throughout the research process, focusses on patient-identified priorities, and improves patient outcomes. This research, conducted by multidisciplinary teams in partnership with relevant stakeholders, aims to apply the knowledge generated to improve health outcomes for Canadians.

The Strategy for Patient-Oriented Research (SPOR) is a national coalition of federal, provincial and territorial partners (patients and informal caregivers, health authorities, academic health centres, charities, philanthropic organizations, private sector, etc.) dedicated to the integration of patient-oriented research into care.

SPOR funded research requires the inclusion of a diversity of patients (including PWLLE) in health research in a culturally safe manner, while considering accessibility and equity within the patient partners they include in their patient-oriented research.

The vision for SPOR is that Canada will demonstrably improve health outcomes and enhance the health care experience for patients through the integration of evidence at all levels of the health care system.

CIHR is committed to leverage the power of research to accelerate global health equity for all. The CIHR Framework for Action on Global Health Research 2021-2026 recognizes that CIHR must work globally because today’s most pressing health problems, and many of the most effective strategies to prevent, contain, and address them, are global. In alignment with this Framework, this priority announcement aims to grow global health research capacity and excellence.

Funding will be provided for applications that have a primary focus on global health research (as per CIHR’s definition) and that are relevant to one of the mandates below:
o Centre for Research on Pandemic Preparedness and Health Emergencies
o Institute of Gender and Health
o Institute of Population and Public Health

Sport science has traditionally centered male athletes, either ignoring, or extrapolating findings to female athletes. Focusing on sex as a biological variable and gender as a social variable, this priority announcement (PA) aims to address research gaps in understanding the health of female athletes in the context of organized sport participation.

This PA is the result of a partnership between the CIHR Institute of Gender and Health (CIHR-IGH) and Sports Canada. For the purpose of this PA, sport is defined as “Activities that develop specific skills, and that are organized around competition and governed by rules” and will contribute to the National Women's Health Research Initiative (NWHRI) which is advancing a coordinated research program that addresses under-researched and high-priority areas of women's health and will ensure new evidence improves women's and gender-diverse people's care and health outcomes. The NWHRI promotes an intersectional lens to research and care to tackle persistent gaps for all women, including for Indigenous, Black, and racialized women, women with disabilities, and members of Two-Spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, and additional sexually and gender diverse (2SLGBTQI+) communities.

This PA is designed to support research that consider physical, biological, reproductive, psychological, emotional, cultural, and/or spiritual health as it relates to female athletes participating in sports across the life-course together with gender and other intersecting variables.

• This award was established to recognize the excellence of cancer research being conducted in Canada. This award will be given annually to the highest-ranking Early Career Researchers in the Project competition that fall within the CIHR Institute of Cancer Research (CIHR-ICR) mandate:
o ICR has a mandate to support research that reduces the burden of cancer on individuals and families through prevention strategies, screening, diagnosis, effective treatments, psycho-social support systems, and palliation.

• This priority announcement (PA) is designed to support research in Cancer Prevention and Early Detection of Cancer within the following areas:
o Research that prevents the onset of cancer (lowers cancer risk) and/or reduces the severity of the disease through early detection when it is at its most treatable.
o Research that creates new knowledge in cancer prevention and screening and/or moves it into practice in the health system, communities, workplaces, and in the daily lives of Canadians.

• The CIHR Institute of Genetics (CIHR-IG) will provide funding for applications that are determined to be relevant to its mandate:
o CIHR-IG supports research on the human and model genomes and on all aspects of genetics, basic biochemistry and cell biology related to health and disease, including the translation of knowledge into health policy and practice, and the societal implications of genetic discoveries
