The Canada Graduate Scholarships to Honour Nelson Mandela celebrate Nelson Mandela’s legacy, and his tireless pursuit of peace, democracy, justice and freedom through learning, understanding and education. The honour of having their scholarship named a “Canada Graduate Scholarship to Honour Nelson Mandela,” is granted to select Canada Graduate Scholarship (Master’s and Doctoral) who's research aligns with at least one of five themes championed by Mandela: national unity; democracy; freedom and human rights; leadership; children’s participation in society; and children’s health.

Project activities include: (1) assessing capabilities, needs and gaps in each country; (2) developing a train-the-trainer cadre of national trainers; (3) facilitating the delivery of nationally-tailored training in each country, delivered by national experts, and with a strong focus on intelligence operations, and how to strike balance between regional information sharing and the protection of sensitive information; (4) organizing and facilitating peer-to-peer workshops to exchange best practices and lessons learned from actual radiological/nuclear trafficking cases; and (5) organizing and delivering a regional tabletop exercise focusing on a scenario involving the trafficking of radioactive material through multiple countries.

The project aims to improve the well-being of women and girls through evidence-based gender-sensitive policy and programming recommendations on sustaining and scaling up innovations for food and nutrition security.

It reviews and learns from the experience of five sub-projects funded under the Canadian International Food Security Research Fund (CIFSRF) Phase 2 project, with special attention to their sustainability and prospects for scaling up, as well as their positive impact on women’s empowerment and gender equality.

Project activities include: (1) Training health care providers (in facilities and community based) on SRHR, GBV, gender equality, one health and community performance cards; (2) establishing and supporting community solidarity mechanisms, including women village savings and loan associations, to increase vulnerable people, especially women and girls, access to health care; (3) piloting a decentralized training and simulation centre in different health centers; (4) Providing technical support to partner universities to develop e-learning modules; (5) Providing technical support and training to Government of Benin on equality, diversity and inclusion as well as gender equality and environment.

Project activities include: (1) mapping key stakeholders’ respective capabilities, functions, needs, and points of contact to identify gaps in the overall response and lay the groundwork for coordination; (2) identifying and operationalizing a secure shared communications channel to intake and match requests for support with available resources and capabilities across the network; (3) convening ad hoc briefings in meetings with stakeholders; and (4) undertaking analysis and collecting lessons learned during the response to the Ukrainian crisis.

Project activities include: (1) distributing cash transfers to school-aged girls to encourage the completion of their education; (2) providing grants to schools for the improvement of physical conditions and resources, such as sanitation and hygiene infrastructure and books or other learning materials; (3) improving education services through teacher training, curriculum reviews, and systems to monitor attendance and school performance; and (4) addressing key barriers to girls’ access to education emphasizing the prevention of sexual and gender-based violence and child marriage.
