Grants and Contributions

This annual assessed contribution represents Canada’s long-term support to the Commonwealth Foundation. The Commonwealth Foundation uses these funds, along with other donors’ funding, to achieve its mandate.

The mandate of the Secretariat includes supporting the Commonwealth as a corporate secretariat, undertaking policy and advocacy work (notably in support of small and vulnerable states), and providing assistance to member countries in the form of technical and advisory services.

The current Strategic Plan (2017-2021) orients the work of the Secretariat around three goals: 1) Strong democracy, rule of law, promotion and protection of human rights and respect for diversity; 2) Inclusive growth and sustainable development; 3) A well-connected and networked Commonwealth. These in turn inform five strategic outcomes (priorities), namely: 1) Democracy (Greater adherence to Commonwealth political values and principles); 2) Public Institutions (More effective, efficient and equitable public governance); 3) Youth and Social Development (People of the Commonwealth fulfil their potential with dignity and equality in a healthy environment); 4) Economic Development (More inclusive economic growth and sustainable development); and 5) Small and Other Vulnerable States (Strengthened resilience of small and other vulnerable states, including adaptation and mitigation against climate change).

This annual assessed contribution represents Canada’s long-term support to the Commonwealth Youth Programme (CYP). The Commonwealth Youth Program uses these funds, along with other donors’ funding, to achieve its mandate.

This funding contributes to supporting youth development, engagement and empowerment in the Commonwealth, and to enhancing Canada’s relationships with the 53 other Commonwealth countries on youth issues. The CYP advocates for the effective participation of young women and men in the development process and for social transformation, and values their full engagement at all levels of decision-making. The assessed contributions to the CYP are managed by the Commonwealth Secretariat.

Improving awareness and response to diabetic foot care in the Solomon Islands through community theatre, training health workers and distribution of health promotion products to health centres.

Empowerment, awareness raising and strengthened networks of Indigenous Women leaders who participated in the Electoral Observation Mission

This project aims to support democracy and socio-political stability in Senegal through capacity building and the promotion of peace, cohesion and political and social dialogue to prevent the difficulties inherent in the electoral process.

Project activities include: 1) supporting capacity building for women, youth groups and grassroots community organizations on conflict prevention, dialogue and mediation; 2) organizing a national consultation and media training workshops on peacebuilding, conflict prevention and combating information pollution; 3) set up a digital early-warning platform by creating a network of “whistle-blowers” in different regions of the country who observe election-related tensions and violence; 4) organize dialogues between women and political, religious, traditional and customary actors; 5) produce and disseminate a study on the impact of electoral violence on women in Senegal; and 6) support capacity building for the High Council for Social Dialogue.

This project will strengthen the capacities and means of action of more than 2,380 people, 60% of whom are women. Several activities to promote peace, cohesion and political and social dialogue before, during and after the elections are scheduled to take place throughout the country. The indirect beneficiaries are the entire Senegalese population, estimated at over 18 million people, 50.2% of whom are women and girls.)
