CIHR is committed to leverage the power of research to accelerate global health equity for all. The CIHR Framework for Action on Global Health Research 2021-2026 recognizes that CIHR must work globally because today’s most pressing health problems, and many of the most effective strategies to prevent, contain, and address them, are global. In alignment with this Framework, this priority announcement aims to grow global health research capacity and excellence.

Funding will be provided for applications that have a primary focus on global health research (as per CIHR’s definition) and that are relevant to one of the mandates below:
o Centre for Research on Pandemic Preparedness and Health Emergencies
o Institute of Gender and Health
o Institute of Population and Public Health

• Incorporating sex and gender into health research makes for better science that is more rigorous and more applicable to the needs of everybody. The CIHR Institute of Gender and Health (CIHR-IGH) will provide funding for applications determined to be relevant to its mandate and that explicitly incorporate an intersectional lens within sex, gender and health research.
o The CIHR-IGH mandate is to foster research excellence regarding the influence of sex and gender on health and to apply these findings to identify and address pressing health challenges facing men, women, girls, boys and gender-diverse people.

A team of Canadian scientists and engineers, including Nobel Laureate Art McDonald, are part of an international team that collaborated with Canadian industry to develop a robust, easy-to-manufacture ventilator that was certified and manufactured with off-the-shelf parts from established supply chains. The Mechanical Ventilator Milano provides a controlled supply of oxygen and air to the most severe adult COVID-19 patients.

Through this project, the international team has unused research funds provided by independent donors that they wish to commit towards research into prevention or response to Covid-19 or similar future pandemics.

The McDonald Ventilator Research Fund, in partnership with Queen’s University will provide funding for applications that are relevant to:

o Preventing or responding to COVID-19 or similar future pandemics

• The CIHR Institute of Human Development, Child and Youth Health (CIHR-IHDCYH), will provide bridge funding for an application that is relevant to the Institute's¿mandate:
o As a lifecycle-based Institute, IHDCYH has a broad mandate that covers defined time periods and a wide range of issues pertaining to human development: pre-conception; fertilization; embryonic and fetal development; the health of the mother and father; and the health and development of infants, children, and youth.
• Bridge funding can be used at the NPA’s discretion to catalyze work on their proposed project in the manner they feel best moves forward their research program, for example, collection of pilot data, demonstration of feasibility, or work to address peer review comments.
• Researchers from all career stages are eligible to apply to this Priority Announcement.

• This award was established to recognize the excellence of cancer research being conducted in Canada. This award will be given annually to the highest-ranking Early Career Researchers in the Project competition that fall within the CIHR Institute of Cancer Research (CIHR-ICR) mandate:
o ICR has a mandate to support research that reduces the burden of cancer on individuals and families through prevention strategies, screening, diagnosis, effective treatments, psycho-social support systems, and palliation.

• The CIHR Institute of Cancer Research (CIHR-ICR) has a mandate to support research that reduces the burden of cancer on individuals and families through prevention strategies, screening, diagnosis, effective treatments, psycho-social support systems, and palliation.
• This priority announcement (PA) is designed to support research in Cancer Prevention and Early Detection of Cancer within the following areas:
o Research that prevents the onset of cancer (lowers cancer risk) and/or reduces the severity of the disease through early detection when it is at its most treatable.
o Research that creates new knowledge in cancer prevention and screening and/or moves it into practice in the health system, communities, workplaces, and in the daily lives of Canadians.

• The CIHR Institute of Cancer Research (CIHR-ICR) has a mandate to support research that reduces the burden of cancer on individuals and families through prevention strategies, screening, diagnosis, effective treatments, psycho-social support systems, and palliation.

The specific objective of this funding opportunity is:

• To provide entry for trainees to the SPA 2024 program to trainees interested in the area of: Ageism in Health Research, Delivery, and Outcomes in Older Adults.
