Grants and Contributions

The CIHR Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Research Initiative, under the co-leadership of CIHR's Institute of Infection and Immunity (CIHR-III) and CIHR's Institute of Population and Public Health (CIHR-IPPH) supports the development of broader, more cohesive engagement and actions, methods and tools to combat AMR and improve antimicrobial use.
In alignment with CIHR's commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) in the research system, the RI champions EDI as a means to support excellence in research, training and knowledge mobilization. Therefore, we encourage people from diverse backgrounds, including groups underrepresented in science such as women and racial and ethnic minorities, to apply.

The CIHR Institute of Health Services and Policy Research (CIHR-IHSPR) has a mandate to support innovative research, capacity-building and knowledge translation initiatives designed to improve the way health care services are organized, regulated, managed, financed, paid for, used and delivered, in the interest of improving the health and quality of life of all Canadians. More information about IHSPR and the Institute’s directions and priorities can be found within its Strategic Plan 2021- 2026, entitled “Accelerate health system transformation through research to achieve the Quadruple Aim and equity for all”.

• The CIHR Institute of Infection and Immunity (CIHR-III) will fund applications that are determined to be specifically relevant to their mandate with a primary focus on biomedical research in which the objective and aims are directed towards building foundational knowledge in immunology and/or infectious diseases. This priority announcement will prioritize funding for research in the following research areas:
o Infection:
¿ Zoonotic or vector-borne transmission of pathogens in the context of Global Climate Change;
¿ Understanding functional genomics and/or molecular epidemiology of emerging/re-emerging pathogens;
¿ Resistance to fungal infections and/or the role of bacteriophages in combatting antimicrobial resistance (AMR).
o Immunity:
¿ Immune mechanisms involved in the development of trained innate immunity;
¿ Immune mechanisms involved in the development and maintenance of tissue-specific immunity;
¿ Metabolic regulation of immune cells and processes (immunometabolism).
• Should there be no eligible applications relevant to the research areas identified above, III will fund applications that are relevant to its mandate with a primary focus on biomedical research in which the objective and aims are directed towards building foundational knowledge in immunology and/or infectious diseases.

• The CIHR Institute of Musculoskeletal Health and Arthritis (CIHR-IMHA) will fund applications that are determined relevant to its mandate and research priority areas as described below:
• IMHA mandate areas
o Pain
o Oral Health

Patient-Oriented Research (POR), which is foundational to evidence-informed health care, refers to a continuum of research that engages patients, including People with Lived and Living Experience (PWLLE), as partners throughout the research process, focusses on patient-identified priorities, and improves patient outcomes. This research, conducted by multidisciplinary teams in partnership with relevant stakeholders, aims to apply the knowledge generated to improve health outcomes for Canadians.

The Strategy for Patient-Oriented Research (SPOR) is a national coalition of federal, provincial and territorial partners (patients and informal caregivers, health authorities, academic health centres, charities, philanthropic organizations, private sector, etc.) dedicated to the integration of patient-oriented research into care.

SPOR funded research requires the inclusion of a diversity of patients (including PWLLE) in health research in a culturally safe manner, while considering accessibility and equity within the patient partners they include in their patient-oriented research.

The vision for SPOR is that Canada will demonstrably improve health outcomes and enhance the health care experience for patients through the integration of evidence at all levels of the health care system.
