Grants and Contributions

• The CIHR Institute of Circulatory and Respiratory Health (CIHR-ICRH) will provide funding for applications in which the objectives and aims are determined to be largely and directly relevant to the ICRH mandate as described below:
o CIHR-ICRH supports research into causes, mechanisms, prevention, screening, diagnosis, treatment, support systems, and palliation for a wide range of conditions associated with the heart, lung, brain (stroke), blood, blood vessels, critical care and sleep.
• These grants afford nominated principal investigators an opportunity to resubmit their research proposal without the loss of momentum, staff or trainees.

• The CIHR Institute of Genetics (CIHR-IG) will provide funding for applications that are determined to be relevant to its mandate:
o CIHR-IG supports research on the human and model genomes and on all aspects of genetics, basic biochemistry and cell biology related to health and disease, including the translation of knowledge into health policy and practice, and the societal implications of genetic discoveries

The Project Grant program is expected to:
• Support a diverse portfolio of health-related research and knowledge translation proposals at any stage, from discovery to application, including commercialization;
• Promote relevant collaborations across disciplines, professions, and sectors; and
• Contribute to the creation and use of health-related knowledge.

The Centre for Research on Pandemic Preparedness and Health Emergencies (CRPPHE) will offer funding to support at least one application that has a primary research objective related to preventing, preparing for, responding to, or recovering from existing and future pandemics and other health emergencies.

*For the purpose of this Priority Announcement, a health emergency is defined as:

A present or imminent event or phenomenon, of a temporary, acute nature, with actual or potential significant negative impacts on human health, resulting in a serious disruption of the functioning of a community; and/or the declaration of a state of emergency by a municipal, provincial/territorial, federal and/or Indigenous government, or international organization with a health research mandate, and that requires prompt research action to protect and strengthen human health

• Canada’s Strategy for Patient-Oriented Research (SPOR) is a national coalition of federal, provincial and territorial partners (patients and informal caregivers, provincial health authorities, health centres, charities, philanthropic organizations, private sector, etc.) dedicated to the integration of research into care. Its vision is that by 2025, Canada will have demonstrably improved health outcomes and enhanced the health care experience for patients through the integration of evidence at all levels of the health care system.
• As outlined in the SPOR Patient Engagement Framework, patient-oriented research refers to a continuum of research that engages patients as partners, focusses on patient-identified priorities and improves patient outcomes. This research, conducted by multidisciplinary teams in partnership with relevant stakeholders, aims to apply the knowledge generated to improve healthcare systems and practices.
• As a partner in SPOR, CIHR will provide bridge funding for applications that are aligned with the SPOR vision, the SPOR Patient Engagement Framework and the SPOR Capacity Development Framework.

• The CIHR Institute of Indigenous Peoples’ Health (CIHR-IIPH) will provide funding for applications that are relevant to its mandate. The CIHR-IIPH fosters the advancement of a national health research agenda to improve and promote the health of First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples in Canada, through research, knowledge translation and capacity building. The Institute's pursuit of research excellence is enhanced by respect for community research priorities and Indigenous knowledges, values and cultures.

• Amplify and evaluate the collective impact of THINC projects towards achieving Quadruple Aim goals and health equity.

The specific objectives of this funding opportunity are to:

1. Promote research independence and academic research career readiness of highly qualified post-doctoral researchers, clinicians and PhD-holding research associates belonging to specific underrepresented groups;
2. Increase the number of funded researchers from specific underrepresented groups conducting excellent research who secure their first independent research faculty position in a Canadian academic, health system or research institution; and
3. Provide funded researchers from specific underrepresented groups with early career support to enhance their probability of future success in obtaining independent research funding and launching successful research faculty careers in Canada that will contribute to the creation and/or use of health-related knowledge to improve the health of Canadians.

The Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships Program aims to attract and retain top-tier postdoctoral talent, both nationally and internationally, to develop their leadership potential and to position them for success as research leaders of tomorrow, positively contributing to Canada’s economic, social and research-based growth through a research-intensive career.

The specific objectives of this funding opportunity are:

• to support planning activities, partnership development and to increase understanding of the health research landscape that will contribute to the advancement of research consistent with the mandate of CIHR; and
• to support dissemination events and activities that focus on the communication of health research evidence to the appropriate researcher or knowledge-user audiences, tailoring the message and medium as appropriate.
