The specific objective of this funding opportunity is to:

• Catalyze and support research efforts of Canadian researchers to use the available CLSA data to better understand how biological, medical, psychological, social, lifestyle and/or economic aspects of people’s lives have an impact on both maintaining health and the development of disease and disability as people age.

This Priority Announcement (PA) is led by the Institute of Circulatory and Respiratory Health (CIHR-ICRH), in partnership with the Canadian Allergy, Asthma and Immunology foundation (CAAIF).

The CIHR-ICRH has the broad mandate of supporting research on the heart, lung, brain (stroke), blood, blood vessels, critical and intensive care, and sleep.

CAAIF has the mission to invest in high-quality Canadian research to better prevent and treat allergy, asthma and immunologic diseases.

This PA is focused on acute asthma care across the lifespan, including, but not limited to, data acquisition.
• The proposed research should inform the management of acute asthma care, including, but not limited to, the use of inhalers.
• The proposed research should consider and/or include more than one (1) developmental or intergenerational period over the lifespan. Examples include, but are not limited to:
• one developmental period such as before and after puberty or before and after age 18, or
• different developmental periods across generations (e.g. biological parent and fetus or offspring), or
• two (2) developmental periods in females related to puberty, child-bearing age and menopause.

For the purpose of this PA:

• Acute asthma care includes assessment and diagnosis, management and control of symptoms, monitoring and supportive care, preventative measures such as management of triggers and risk factors, patient education and intensive care.

The specific objective of this funding opportunity is to:

• Provide funding to develop and implement an intensive capacity-building program for forty trainees in targeted strategic areas.

The CIHR Institute of Neurosciences, Mental Health and Addiction (CIHR-INMHA) will fund an application that is determined to be relevant to their mandate and research priority areas:¿

• INMHA supports research to enhance mental health, neurological health, vision, hearing, and cognitive functioning and to reduce the burden of related disorders through prevention strategies, screening, diagnosis, treatment, support systems, and palliation.¿

The CIHR Institute for Population and Public Health (CIHR-IPPH) will fund applications that are relevant to their mandate, relevant to CIHR’s definition of population health research (pillar 4 research), focused on meaningfully improving health equity* and aligned with one or more of the following IPPH strategic research areas:
• Healthy Cities: applications aligned with CIHR's Healthy Cities Research Initiative (HCRI) and focused on population health intervention research and/or implementation science as it relates to urban environments.
• Public Health Systems: applications that identify and/or address key public health systems research priorities in Canada.
• Moving Upstream: applications with a primary focus on interdisciplinary research into the structural determinants of health to meaningfully address the root causes and systems that create health inequities in Canada and globally.

The CIHR Institute of Neurosciences, Mental Health and Addiction (CIHR-INMHA) will fund an application that is determined to be relevant to their mandate and research priority areas:¿

• INMHA supports research to enhance mental health, neurological health, vision, hearing, and cognitive functioning and to reduce the burden of related disorders through prevention strategies, screening, diagnosis, treatment, support systems, and palliation.¿

CRPPHE will offer funding for bridge grants to research projects that are aligned with the CRPPHE goal and objectives and the Interim Investment Plan and that have a primary research objective related to preparing for and/or responding to existing and future pandemics and other health emergencies*.
