The second phase of TURQUESA aims to support beneficiary countries in disrupting and dismantling organized crime groups that engage in trafficking in persons (TIP) and smuggling of migrants (SOM) in the Americas, thereby eliminating the threat they pose to regional stability and rule of law.

This project will address critical minerals crimes in the Asia-Pacific region through strengthened governance, targeted capacity building, and regional coordination. The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime will engage national authorities of Mongolia, the Philippines, and Indonesia to prevent, detect, and respond to minerals-related organized crime, including illicit financial flows and corruption. Project activities include: 1) assessments on minerals-sector crime risks and criminal justice solutions; 2) law enforcement capacity building; and 3) convening regional coordination to reduce critical minerals crimes that threaten shared Canadian and Asia-Pacific interests.

The project addresses natural resource governance in the Indo-Pacific, a region facing biodiversity loss, climate change, and geopolitical tensions. It is organized into four research streams: (1) climate change and livelihood adaptation, focusing on ecosystem disruptions and governance models; (2) economic security and critical minerals, analyzing supply chain resilience and Canada’s partnerships; (3) work and migration, examining labour rights and forced labour in sectors like fisheries and extractives; and (4) Indigenous rights, exploring legal traditions and resource governance among Indigenous and minority groups. The initiative supports graduate and faculty mobility, funding 6 PhD and 5 MA field scholarships, 8 travel grants, 17 assistantships, 1 postdoctoral fellowship, and 7 faculty fellowships. Activities include co-publications, an online dialogue series, workshops, and a final hybrid conference. Building on partnerships with regional institutions, the project aims to strengthen Canadian expertise, foster collaboration, and align with Canada’s Indo-Pacific Strategy priorities.?

This project will produce the most precise 3D temperature map of an exoplanet to date using JWST/NIRSpec eclipse mapping of the ultra-hot Jupiter KELT-20b. Sensitive to water and CO emission, the observations will probe horizontal and vertical temperature structure, revealing how stellar energy is redistributed and how molecular dissociation shapes the atmosphere. The results will also constrain the planet’s C/O and refractory-to-volatile ratios, which are key tracers of its formation and migration.

This project will use JWST/NIRSpec and MIRI/MRS to obtain the first spectroscopic study of an auroral-emitting extrasolar world – the cold brown dwarf WISEP J1935-1546. Building on prior methane emission detections, the observations will search for CH4, H3+ and NH3+ features and test whether the emissions arise from a thermal inversion or magnetic interactions. The results will link planetary, substellar and exoplanetary atmospheric processes, demonstrating JWST’s unique reach for such faint targets.
