The objective of the Indigenous Courtwork Program is to facilitate and enhance access to justice by assisting Indigenous Persons (adults and youth) charged with an offence under any federal or provincial statute, municipal by-law, or otherwise involved in the criminal justice system to obtain fair, just, equitable and culturally relevant treatment. These services include information on charges, court procedures, rights and responsibilities, bail, diversion, restorative justice and Indigenous community justice alternatives; support in accessing legal resources as well as appropriate community programming including wellness, trauma, housing, family and employment services; and, facilitating communication among court officials, accused persons, family members and communities to ensure understanding and collaboration.

The purpose of this contribution is to reimburse Paul Cavalluzzo for activities undertaken by him in his role as a Special Advocate in relation to hearings before the Federal Court of Canada.

Jurisdictional funding agreement for State-Funded Counsel.

This project will support the ongoing service delivery of the Central Alberta Child Advocacy Centre's Child and Family Advocacy Program, with the primary objective to support children, youth and families impacted by abuse with specialized support, advocacy, referrals, resources, and programming from disclosure of abuse through investigation, judicial activities and healing processes. The project will also continue to embed cultural responsiveness as a strategic priority for the organization to communicate actions and outcomes to foster trust and accountability.

Over the next five years, the project will develop and pilot services at the Chinook Child and Youth Advocacy Centre in Southwestern Alberta. The Centre will be a multidisciplinary service to address the needs of child and youth victims and/or witnesses as they navigate the criminal justice system, thereby minimizing system-induced trauma by providing a single, child-friendly setting for young victims or witnesses and their families seeking services.

Over the next five years, the project will support the Indigenous Liaison role within the Centre. The position will provide direct support to Indigenous child abuse victims and families as well as building connections with Indigenous communities.

Over the next five years, the project will pilot services and deliver ongoing service delivery to the Bison Child and Youth Advocacy Centre in the Northwest Region of Alberta. The centre provides a coordinated approach to addressing the needs of child and youth victims and/or witnesses as they navigate the criminal justice system, thereby minimizing system-induced trauma by providing a single, child-friendly setting for young victims or witnesses and their families seeking services.

Over the next five years, Safe Kids & Youth, a rural-modelled Child and Youth Advocacy Centre, will provide a coordinated response to children and youth who are victims of abuse through forensic interviews by police and child protection; consistent advocacy and support to families throughout the entire process and regular multi-disciplinary team case review meetings.

Over the next five years, Sophie’s Place will provide child-focused, multi-disciplinary services and support to children, youth, and their families in cases where abuse is suspected using trauma-informed best practices.
