The Government of New Brunswick’s Restorative Justice Practices in Conflict and Crime: Enhancing the Justice System Response for Our Youth project aims to enhance current efforts pertaining to ensuring a more effective youth justice system, as well as enabling greater citizen and community participation in New Brunswick. The project includes targeted engagement and awareness-building with specified audiences across NB, with a focus on providing trauma-informed, culturally appropriate, and restorative options for youth in conflict with the law, with mindful consideration for the needs of Indigenous youth. The project will achieve four primary objectives: 1) increased training and education on restorative processes across the provincial criminal justice system; 2) targeted engagement and awareness-building through strategic campaigns, working groups, facilitated dialogue, and more; 3) increase referrals to diversionary measures, including predominantly restorative process; and 4) annual conference to bring all stakeholders together.

The funding will support the operation and expansion of existing Drug Treatment Courts (DTCs) as well as the establishment of new DTCs. This funding will contribute to reduce recidivism rates by supporting eligible offenders in addressing their cycle of problematic substance use and criminal behaviour through the availability of treatment as an alternative to incarceration.

The proposal seeks to expand a pilot project to hire human rights coordinators for Thunder Bay and Odawa Friendship Centres to support building knowledge of Indigenous human and civil rights.

Through its project titled “Enhancement Of Programing For Black and Indigenous Youth In The Justice System To Address Over-Representation”, the Ontario Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services aims to increase the capacity and responsiveness of its youth justice system to better address gender-based violence (GBV) and the over-representation of Black and Indigenous Youth in the Criminal Justice System. This project will also continue to empower community-based organizations/communities to address local self-identified current and emerging gaps and needs in the youth justice service system through programming and services that are culturally relevant. Additionally, this project will actively work with Provincial/ Territorial (PT) partners to share best practices on the programs, which in turn will mutually benefit different areas/sectors across the country.

Jurisdictional funding agreement for State-Funded Counsel

The “Community Youth Reintegration Program” will expand current justice services to provide youth reintegration programming in the communities under the Saskatoon Tribal Council. The goal of the program is to provide intensive mentorship for high-risk youth and will include culturally responsive programming unique to the communities' needs with the use of knowledge keeper and elders, community members, community resources and agencies, family and peers, to develop unique case plans.

Over the next five years, the project will focus on the continued provision of wrap-around, holistic care service delivery and child-focused, trauma-informed collaborative response to child abuse, designed to facilitate powerful positive experiences for children and their families.
