The Research Tools and Instruments (RTI) grants foster and enhance the discovery, innovation and training capability of university researchers in the natural sciences and engineering by supporting the purchase of research equipment.

The Centre for Research on Pandemic Preparedness and Health Emergencies (CRPPHE) is housed at CIHR with a mandate to grow Canada's research leadership in preparedness, prevention, response, and recovery from pandemics and public health emergencies, including by building and supporting Canadian research capacity in the field.
CRPPHE will offer multi-year funding to support research projects that are aligned with the CRPPHE overall goal and objectives and which have a primary research objective related to preparing for and/or responding to existing and future pandemics and other health emergencies* and fall within the following research areas:
• Behavioural sciences related to improving the uptake of public health recommendations and interventions (pharmaceutical or non-pharmaceutical) including in populations experiencing systemic inequities, conditions of marginalization, Indigenous Peoples and/or among populations who are historically under-served by public systems.
• Health Systems Research (including public health systems) focused on improving integration of research and practice, and/or developing capacity within the health system for actionable, equitable, and solution-oriented health research during health emergencies that is relevant, timely, and informed by practice, patients and/or communities. This focus aligns with the Strategy on Patient-Oriented Research (SPOR) and the Institute of Health Services and Policy Research’s (IHSPR) Strategic Plan to advance the Quadruple Aim and Health Equity.
• Indigenous Health Research focused on health emergency preparedness and response and that promotes Indigenous community collaborations and communities’ right to self-determination.
• Infectious disease modelling using statistical, mathematical or computational approaches to inform decisions on disease prevention, surveillance, control and treatment including economic modeling.
• One Health – interdisciplinary and holistic approaches to prevent and address emerging or re-emerging zoonotic pathogens of pandemic potential.

CIHR is committed to leverage the power of research to accelerate global health equity for all. The CIHR Framework for Action on Global Health Research 2021-2026 recognizes that CIHR must work globally because today’s most pressing health problems, and many of the most effective strategies to prevent, contain, and address them, are global. In alignment with this Framework, this priority announcement aims to grow global health research capacity and excellence.
Funding will be provided for applications that have a primary focus on global health research (as per CIHR’s definition) and that are relevant to one of the mandates below:
• Centre for Research on Pandemic Preparedness and Health Emergencies (CRPPHE)
• Institute of Population and Public Health (IPPH)

Alliance grants encourage university researchers to collaborate with partner organizations, which can be from the private, public or not-for-profit sectors. These grants support research projects led by strong, complementary, collaborative teams that will generate new knowledge and accelerate the application of research results to create benefits for Canada.

The Operating Grants competition is the principal means by which CRS fulfills its mission to support
fundamental, early translational and environment-cancer research on all types of cancer.

The NSERC Postgraduate Scholarships-Doctoral Program (PGS D) provides financial support to high calibre scholars who are engaged in a doctoral program in the natural sciences or engineering. This support allows these scholars to fully concentrate on their studies and seek out the best research mentors in their chosen fields.

The Canada Graduate Scholarships-Master’s (CGS M) Program helps develop research skills and assist in the training of highly qualified personnel by supporting students who demonstrate a high standard of achievement in undergraduate and early graduate studies.

Develop digital adoption plan

The Sustainable agriculture research initiative aims to support multidisciplinary, collaborative networks of researchers, mobilizing expertise and technologies in the social and natural sciences, engineering and in areas that broaden the traditional network of agriculture research partners.

The Undergraduate Student Research Awards (USRA) are meant to nurture the interest of the students and fully develop their potential for a research career in the natural sciences and engineering. They are also meant to encourage students to undertake graduate studies in these fields. Students who would like to gain research experience in an academic setting, these awards can provide financial support through the hosting university. NSERC encourages qualified Aboriginal students to apply to this program.
