The purpose of this CanExport Associations contribution agreement is to support organizations and ultimately aims to increase the competitiveness of Canadian companies, in the international marketplace, on a sectoral basis, thereby contributing to Canadian prosperity and the growth of the Canadian economy. This financial support enables the recipient to undertake new or expanded international business development promotion activities, in a given sector, for the benefit of its entire industry (member and non-member firms).

The Polestar payload aims to address outstanding questions on the mechanism of space anemia. Polestar will test three key hypotheses: 1. Older red blood cells (RBC) are preferentially destroyed in space; 2. Space can induce a shift from adult to fetal hemoglobin; and 3. Space induces RBC morphological changes, causing RBC dysfunction. Using blood and air samples collected from the SpaceX Polaris Dawn five-day mission, Polestar will measure the effect of high-altitude space and space radiation on space hemolysis in four astronauts compared to four age-related and sex-matched ground controls. Polestar will investigate the subpopulation of hemolyzed RBCs, hemoglobin gene-switching, and RBC anomalies, using state-of-the-art methods often applied for the first time to space samples. Polestar leverages private space missions to speed up critical space life science advances.

The project aims to urgently address the growing need for emergency shelter, substance use support, and culturally appropriate recovery services in response to rising homelessness and overdose rates in Sioux Lookout and surrounding areas. It will enhance the Sioux Lookout Emergency Shelter and Safe Sobering Site by hiring specialized staff, such as Integrated Community Case Managers, and expanding access to cultural and health resources. These will include on-the-land healing workshops, traditional ceremonies, and other Indigenous-led spiritual support sessions. The shelter will undergo retrofits to increase its capacity and create designated spaces for harm reduction and cultural programming. These upgrades will include areas for land-based learning, a kitchen for meal preparation, enhanced safety measures, and dedicated cultural spaces such as a sacred fire area. Together, these improvements will help meet the growing demand for emergency shelter services and ensure the delivery of comprehensive, immediate, and culturally appropriate care, along with clear pathways to recovery.

Grant awarded under the Participant Funding Program to the Adams Lake Indian Band to help it prepare for and engage in Indigenous consultation activities and public participation opportunities related to the assessment process for the Yellowhead Copper Project.
