This project aims to help protect and enhance the resilience of climate-vulnerable ecosystems and increase the size of restored forest ecosystems in southern Jordan. It also aims to increase the participation of women, youth, and marginalized groups in decision-making processes so they can benefit from the implementation of nature-based solutions in the region. The project also seeks to pilot interventions designed to increase restored forests areas (by an estimated 750 hectares). This would increase the percentage of women, youth and marginalized groups engaged in and benefitting from improved productivity of the ecosystems in Southern Jordan’s Shoubak and Petra districts. This project contributes to strengthening climate action by promoting gender equality and helping to protect and promote the human rights of vulnerable and marginalized groups. It also seeks to increase their participation in equal decision-making to achieve more equitable access to and control over the resources they need to secure economic and social equality.

February 2023 – The humanitarian situation in Syria deteriorated significantly following powerful earthquakes that struck Syria and Türkiye on February 6 and February 20. The UN estimates that at least 8.8 million people in Syria have been affected by the earthquake, with the majority anticipated to need some form of humanitarian assistance in the coming months. In Syria, pre-existing large-scale humanitarian needs further complicated the response, severe access constraints for humanitarian aid, and weak infrastructure from over a decade of armed conflict.

The Syria Country-Based Pooled Funds (CBPFs), managed by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) are existing pooled funds that mobilize multi-sector emergency response allocations based on partner presence and capacity. With GAC’s support, the CBPFs releases emergency funding for the earthquake response to agencies operating in Syria.

Project activities include: (1) providing needs-based assistance in line with priorities in the emergency flash appeal for Syria; (2) increasing operational response capacity and coverage through diverse partnerships with non-government organizations; and (3) improving timeliness, effectiveness, and efficiency in implementing life-saving activities in Syria.

This project aims to reduce biological threats posed by dual-use research of concern (DURC) and the illicit use of biotechnology. Project activities include: (1) promoting multi-sectoral collaboration with the global community of experts on the responsible use of life sciences (RULS) and DURC; (2) implementing the “Global Guidance Framework for the Responsible Use of the Life Sciences and Dual-Use Research” according to regional and country contexts; and (3) establishing a roster of regional champions to share best practices on RULS and DURC.

At the G7 Summit in May 2023, Canada announced a contribution of CAD 283 million to the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) for the High Impact Partnership on Climate Action, comprising $33.125 million in grants and $250 million in repayable contribution. This project fulfils an important part of Canada’s $5.3 billion international climate finance commitment over the period 2021 to 2026.

The High Impact Partnership on Climate Action (HIPCA) is a multi-donor program that combines commercial finance with concessional donor co-financing, policy engagement and technical assistance to unlock the right market conditions and draw in the private sector for tackling climate change and environmental degradation.

This project aims to advance the transition towards low-carbon, climate-resilient and environmentally compatible pathways in countries where the EBRD operates and which are eligible to receive Official Development Assistance (ODA ), in a manner that seeks to promote gender equality and economic inclusion. Project activities – through the $250 million portion of the total contribution – include: (1) providing concessional financing in support of high-impact climate investments that reduce or prevent greenhouse gas emissions, strengthen resilience, and reduce vulnerability to climate change; and (2) identifying solutions that protect the environment and unlock the private sector to act as an agent for climate and environmental action.

This project supports Myanmar’s Regional Senior Women Protection Advisor (SWPA) position within in the United Nations Development Coordination Office for Asia-Pacific, based in Bangkok, Thailand. The SWPA has worked primarily with the Office of the UN Resident Coordinator (RC) in Myanmar for two years, from January 2023 to December 2024. With Canada’s support, the Regional SWPA ensures the implementation of Conflict-Related Sexual Violence (CRSV)-related to the United Nations Security Council Resolutions in Myanmar and the region. Project activities include: (1) providing guidance and support to UN actors, including the Office of Special Representative of the Secretary General, Regional Coordinator Office (RCO), UN Country Team and Humanitarian Country Team to develop strategies for prevention and response to CRSV; (2) leading the Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Arrangements (MARA) working group for Myanmar, alongside the co-chair from the RCO; (3) leading efforts to engage with and support civil society and women’s rights organizations working in Myanmar from various regional locations; and (4) engaging with the diplomatic community and other key stakeholders to call attention to CRSV issues and coordinate ethical, survivor-centred and timely funding support to national actors.

This grant supports Nunavut Tunngavik Inc (NTI) in the negotiation of an Inuit Impact and Benefit Agreement (IIBA) with Parks Canada. The Inuit negotiating team consists of three representatives from NTI and at least one from each three Regional Inuit Associations plus one legal counsel for a total of seven representatives who must travel from various parts of Nunavut.

This contribution enables Stoney Nakoda Nation to undertake a cultural use assessment for the draft Sunshine Village Long Range Plan and Detailed Impact Assessment. The area holds cultural importance to the Stoney Nakoda Nation.

This grant supports Kopit Lodge in the negotiation of a joint Parks Rights Reconciliation Agreement with Mi’gmawe’l Tplu’taqnn Incorporated (MTI) and Parks Canada. This potential joint agreement with MTI would be the first cooperative agreement to be reached in the province of New Brunswick.

This grant supports the Gulf of Georgia Cannery Society to host the 2023 Welcoming the Sun event as a celebration of Indigenous culture, history, and knowledge at the Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site. Taking place both
indoors and outdoors, there will be opportunities for visitors
to connect to the local Indigenous community through art,
story, song, dance and education.

The contribution supports Pacheedaht First Nation to host and celebrate two community events for the positive steps made in Treaty negotiations and their Nation's Land Stewardship by changing the narrative at Middle Beach.
