February 2023 - Before the Taliban takeover, the humanitarian situation in Afghanistan was already one of the worst in the world. Since the Taliban takeover, humanitarian needs continue to worsen, and the challenging operational context has been further complicated. In 2023, an estimated 28 million people will require humanitarian assistance due to conflict, chronic food insecurity, displacement, the coronavirus (COVID-19), broad economic crisis, and climatic events.

With GAC’s support, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) is providing life-saving assistance and protection support to displaced populations, migrants and affected communities in Afghanistan. Project activities include: (1) providing emergency shelter and non-food item kits; (2) improving access to water, sanitation and hygiene services; and (3) providing health services, including mental health and psychosocial support.

With GAC’s support in humanitarian emergencies, World Food Program (WFP) focuses on providing targeted food assistance to reduce acute malnutrition and food insecurity, and protect livelihoods. Project activities include: (1) procurement and milling of wheat; and (2) the transportation and storage of wheat in Afghanistan.

This project aims to improve health outcomes in rural communities, especially among marginalized women and girls, by applying a One-Health approach to preventing and responding to zoonotic diseases in Ethiopia, Ghana and Uganda. Project activities include: (1) providing training for women and girls on leadership roles in One Health; (2) establishing linkages by water, sanitation and hygiene groups targeting the prevalence of zoonotic diseases due to community practices; (3) providing demonstration sessions for women smallholder farmers on One Health, prevention of zoonoses and climate-smart; (4) developing women’s model farming demonstration sites; and (5) creating a women-centered microfinance, savings and loan program.

The University of Saskatchewan, in collaboration with various local partners, implements this project. This project expects to reach approximately 99,000 direct and indirect beneficiaries in nine rural communities in three countries in Ethiopia, Ghana and Uganda.

The BlueOrchard Latin America and Caribbean Gender, Diversity, and Inclusion Fund aims to increase the financial resilience of women, indigenous populations and people of African descent, as well as to support their material well-being and the growth of their businesses.

The technical support mechanism supports client financial institutions of the fund in developing new financial inclusion solutions for women and in developing strategies to communicate with and effectively promote women clients. It also supports the development of diversity and inclusion policies within the human resources of the fund’s financial institution clients. Technical assistance supports the development or improvement of monitoring and reporting tools on gender, diversity, and inclusion; and helps financial institutions develop training on gender and inclusion for their employees.

Project TURQUESA aims to counter migrant smuggling and human trafficking through effective investigations and prosecutions in the Americas in a joint initiative, implemented by the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL) and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).
The overarching objective of the project is to dismantle, disrupt and bring to justice organized crime groups and networks engaged in the smuggling of migrants (SOM) and Trafficking in Persons (TIP). It will do so by building the capacity of countries in the Americas to track, identify, investigate and prosecute organized criminal groups engaging in these and other related crimes. The project ensures sustainable benefits in the long term by strengthening the capacity of the law enforcement and criminal justice systems in individual countries to address migrant smuggling and human trafficking, improving their ability to engage and coordinate actions within and across national borders.

This Project aims to increase the capability of partner countries in Latin America and the Caribbean to counter maritime crime, in a coordinated manner. This Project will be implemented in Barbados, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Mexico, Panama, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago. In practice, this Project will strengthen the strategic, operational and tactical capacity of national maritime law enforcement agencies and the prosecution of beneficiary countries; provide them with support and technical assistance to foster dialogue and enhance regional coordination of actions at sea at the policy and operational levels; and procure the needed equipment to conduct successful operations to prevent, detect and counter smuggling of migrants at sea.

P012287001: This regional project aims to provide technical assistance in Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, Sudan, and Tunisia, to disrupt foreign terrorist fighter mobility. It seeks to enhance counter-terrorism capacities addressing the transnational threat posed by Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant in this region. The project does so by providing law enforcement professionals modernized equipment and training to strengthen inclusive and gender-responsive strategies for preventing, detecting and combatting terrorism in the Middle East and North Africa region. Project activities include: (1) investigating crime scene; (2) providing effective border management techniques; (3) delivering gender-sensitive training for frontline law enforcement officers, border officers and women police cadets; and (4) establishing regional working groups for enhanced cross-border coordination and information sharing. | P012287002: This regional project aims to provide technical assistance in Iraq, Jordan, and Lebanon, to disrupt foreign terrorist fighter mobility. Project activities include: (1) investigating crime scene; (2) providing effective border management techniques; (3) delivering gender-sensitive training for frontline law enforcement officers, border officers and women police cadets; and (4) establishing regional working groups for enhanced cross-border coordination and information sharing.

Our food technology is centered around a yeast strain that is specially adapted to the space environment (AstroYeast). The yeast acts as a chassis to produce the nutrients crew members will need for their long voyage to our celestial neighbours, combined with flavour molecules that enhance the dining experience. The production of these nutrients and flavour molecules is performed in an automated and optimized bioreactor system. The end product is a delicious and nutritious yeast spread which can be safely consumed.
