The "Youth Restorative Action Project" will be a youth-led restorative justice initiative to address youth criminality. It will prioritize and focus on reintegration, diversion from court, and referrals to community supports including mental health, family counseling, and peer support circles. Through community based, cross-sectoral and youth-led approaches, the project also aims to decrease the overrepresentation of vulnerable youth in the criminal justice system, and develop and share knowledge, tools and resources with the community.

“The Métis Youth Restorative Justice Program” project will enable the creation of a Youth Diversion and Justice program and enhance overall systems capacity to deliver diversion and justice based interventions for Métis youth in conflict with the law. The program will be provincial in scope, trauma-informed and geared to youth who have had early police contact, have been charged with an offence, or are serving sentences in the community or in custody. The program will build staff capacity within the Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO) Justice Program, engage with external stakeholders and partners to promote referrals to the MNO Justice Program, and raise awareness around distinctions-based access to justice for Métis youth.

Through its project titled “Enhancement Of Programing For Black and Indigenous Youth In The Justice System To Address Over-Representation”, the Ontario Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services aims to increase the capacity and responsiveness of its youth justice system to better address gender-based violence (GBV) and the over-representation of Black and Indigenous Youth in the Criminal Justice System. This project will also continue to empower community-based organizations/communities to address local self-identified current and emerging gaps and needs in the youth justice service system through programming and services that are culturally relevant. Additionally, this project will actively work with Provincial/ Territorial (PT) partners to share best practices on the programs, which in turn will mutually benefit different areas/sectors across the country.

Through the "BIPOC Youth Crime Prevention Project", the Calgary John Howard Society strives to support the increasing number of black, Indigenous, and people of colour (BIPOC) youth that are reintegrating into the community from youth correctional facilities. It will address various risk factors, enhance protective factors for BIPOC youth and include one-on-one case management, development of service plans, translations services, support through legal and disciplinary processes, and community and cultural events. The project will test whether intensive relationship building, system navigation, and a conflict resolution component will increase protective factors and reduce recidivism by BIPOC youth.

The Government of New Brunswick’s Restorative Justice Practices in Conflict and Crime: Enhancing the Justice System Response for Our Youth project aims to enhance current efforts pertaining to ensuring a more effective youth justice system, as well as enabling greater citizen and community participation in New Brunswick. The project includes targeted engagement and awareness-building with specified audiences across NB, with a focus on providing trauma-informed, culturally appropriate, and restorative options for youth in conflict with the law, with mindful consideration for the needs of Indigenous youth. The project will achieve four primary objectives: 1) increased training and education on restorative processes across the provincial criminal justice system; 2) targeted engagement and awareness-building through strategic campaigns, working groups, facilitated dialogue, and more; 3) increase referrals to diversionary measures, including predominantly restorative process; and 4) annual conference to bring all stakeholders together.
