Grants and Contributions

• The CIHR Institute of Human Development, Child and Youth Health (CIHR-IHDCYH), will provide bridge funding for an application by an early-career researcher that is relevant to the Institute's mandate:
o As a lifecycle-based Institute, IHDCYH has a broad mandate that covers defined time periods and a wide range of issues pertaining to human development: pre-conception; fertilization; embryonic and fetal development; the health of the mother and father; and the health and development of infants, children and youth.
• Bridge funding can be used at the NPAs discretion to catalyze work on their proposed project in the manner they feel best moves forward their research program, for example, collection of pilot data, demonstration of feasibility, or work to address peer review comments.

• The CIHR Institute of Infection and Immunity (CIHR-III) will fund applications that are determined to be specifically relevant to their mandate with a primary focus on biomedical research in which the objective and aims are directed towards building foundational knowledge in immunology and/or infectious diseases. This priority announcement will prioritize funding for research in the following research areas:
o Infection:
¿ Zoonotic or vector-borne transmission of pathogens in the context of Global Climate Change;
¿ Understanding functional genomics and/or molecular epidemiology of emerging/re-emerging pathogens;
¿ Resistance to fungal infections and/or the role of bacteriophages in combatting antimicrobial resistance (AMR).
o Immunity:
¿ Immune mechanisms involved in the development of trained innate immunity;
¿ Immune mechanisms involved in the development and maintenance of tissue-specific immunity;
¿ Metabolic regulation of immune cells and processes (immunometabolism).
• Should there be no eligible applications relevant to the research areas identified above, III will fund applications that are relevant to its mandate with a primary focus on biomedical research in which the objective and aims are directed towards building foundational knowledge in immunology and/or infectious diseases.

• This prize was established to recognize the excellence of cancer research being conducted in Canada. This Prize will be given annually to the highest ranking Early Career Researchers in the Project Scheme competitions that fall within the Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) mandate:
o ICR has a mandate to support research that reduces the burden of cancer on individuals and families through prevention strategies, screening, diagnosis, effective treatments, psycho-social support systems, and palliation.

• This prize was established to recognize the excellence of research in aging being conducted in Canada. This prize will be given annually to the top two mid career investigators with the highest ranking projects in the Fall Project Scheme competition that are relevant to one of the Institute of Aging’s Strategic Directions as described below:
o Strategic Direction 1: Health and Wellness over the Trajectory of Aging
Priority Areas:
¿ Life trajectory as a determinant of healthy and satisfying aging
¿ Added life to the later years
o Strategic Direction 2: Facing the Complex Health Challenges of an Older Population
Priority Areas:
¿ Understanding, preventing and addressing multiple chronic conditions
¿ Facing the challenge of dementia
¿ Recognizing new emerging aging populations
¿ Ensuring the adaptation of healthcare and services to an aging population
¿ Informing late-life care and decisions

• This prize was established to recognize the excellence of research in aging being conducted in Canada. This prize will be given annually to the top two mid career investigators with the highest ranking projects in the Fall Project Scheme competition that are relevant to one of the Institute of Aging’s Strategic Directions as described below:

• The CIHR Institute of Neurosciences, Mental Health and Addiction (CIHR-INMHA) will fund an application that is determined to be relevant to their mandate and research priority areas.

• The CIHR Institute of Neurosciences, Mental Health and Addiction (CIHR-INMHA) will fund an application that is determined to be relevant to their mandate and research priority areas.

• The CIHR Institute of Nutrition, Metabolism and Diabetes (INMD) will provide funding for applications in which the objectives and aims are determined to be largely and directly relevant to the INMD mandate as described below:
o CIHR-INMD supports research to enhance health in relation to diet, digestion, excretion, and metabolism; and to address causes, prevention, screening, diagnosis, treatment, support systems, and palliation for a wide range of conditions and problems associated with hormone, digestive system, kidney, and liver.
• These grants afford principal investigators an opportunity to resubmit their research proposal without the loss of momentum, staff or trainees.

• The CIHR Institute of Nutrition, Metabolism and Diabetes (INMD) will provide funding for applications in which the objectives and aims are determined to be largely and directly relevant to the INMD mandate as described below:
o CIHR-INMD supports research to enhance health in relation to diet, digestion, excretion, and metabolism; and to address causes, prevention, screening, diagnosis, treatment, support systems, and palliation for a wide range of conditions and problems associated with hormone, digestive system, kidney, and liver.
• These grants afford principal investigators an opportunity to resubmit their research proposal without the loss of momentum, staff or trainees.

The Centre for Research on Pandemic Preparedness and Health Emergencies will provide multi-year funding for applications that have a primary research objective on preventing, preparing for, responding to, and recovering from existing and future pandemics and other health emergencies. While all relevant research applications within this scope are eligible, projects that focus on the prevention of and/or recovery from pandemics and health emergencies are strongly encouraged.

In addition, projects that include at least one of the following topics/themes are also encouraged:

• Clinical, population health or health systems research
• Knowledge Mobilization
• Effect of social, cultural, environmental, structural and/or biological determinants of health or health equity on prevention and / or recovery
• Research priorities identified by First Nation, Inuit, Métis and/or Urban Indigenous communities
• Evaluation of effective science communications and/or knowledge mobilization activities related to prevention and/or recovery
• Evaluation of systems that enable effective and efficient prevention, and/or recovery

*For the purpose of this Priority Announcement, a health emergency is defined as:

A present or imminent event or phenomenon, of a temporary, acute nature, with actual or potential significant negative impacts on human health, resulting in a serious disruption of the functioning of a community; and/or the declaration of a state of emergency by a municipal, provincial/territorial, federal and/or Indigenous government, or international organization with a health research mandate, and which requires prompt research action to protect and strengthen human health
