Grants and Contributions

About this information

In June 2016, as part of the Open Government Action Plan, the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat (TBS) committed to increasing the transparency and usefulness of grants and contribution data and subsequently launched the Guidelines on the Reporting of Grants and Contributions Awards, effective April 1, 2018.

The rules and principles governing government grants and contributions are outlined in the Treasury Board Policy on Transfer Payments. Transfer payments are transfers of money, goods, services or assets made from an appropriation to individuals, organizations or other levels of government, without the federal government directly receiving goods or services in return, but which may require the recipient to provide a report or other information subsequent to receiving payment. These expenditures are reported in the Public Accounts of Canada. The major types of transfer payments are grants, contributions and \'other transfer payments\'.

Included in this category, but not to be reported under proactive disclosure of awards, are (1) transfers to other levels of government such as Equalization payments as well as Canada Health and Social Transfer payments. (2) Grants and contributions reallocated or otherwise redistributed by the recipient to third parties; and (3) information that would normally be withheld under the Access to Information Act and the Privacy Act.

Luminous and dark matter in massive galaxies at z between 4 and 5

Agreement Number:

23JWGO2B05

Duration: from Feb 15, 2024 to Mar 31, 2026
Description:

Following the JWST ERS and Cycle 2 GO Announcement of Opportunity published on July 6, 2023, the CSA is providing funding via a Grant Agreement to the university to conduct their research using the JWST data.

This project will map the distribution of dark matter around 16 massive galaxies when the Universe was only 1-2 billion years old. This will be accomplished by constructing robust mass models to account for the observed rotation curves tracing the gravitational influence exerted by the total (luminous and dark) matter distributions. This project will provide key clues on the nature of dark matter by tracing dark matter halos at a cosmic epoch that has been out of reach until now.

The MIRI Excess Around Degenerates Survey

Agreement Number:

23JWGO2B07

Duration: from Feb 15, 2024 to Apr 30, 2026
Description:

Following the JWST ERS and Cycle 2 GO Announcement of Opportunity published on July 6, 2023, the CSA is providing funding via a Grant Agreement to the university to conduct their research using the JWST data.

This project will conduct a survey proposal of 249 white dwarf stars within 25 parsecs of the sun in order to constrain the flux distributions of a large number of white dwarfs in the mid-infrared. The goal is to detect infrared excesses from cool brown dwarfs, young Jupiters, optically thin dust disks from shredding exo-planetesimals, and cyclotron emission from magnetic white dwarfs. These detections will define white dwarf science (and other fields) with JWST.

Dancing 1 - 14 micron spectra to solve the cloudy and chemical puzzle of brown dwarf variability

Agreement Number:

23JWGO2B14

Duration: from Feb 15, 2024 to Sep 30, 2025
Description:

Following the JWST ERS and Cycle 2 GO Announcement of Opportunity published on July 6, 2023, the CSA is providing funding via a Grant Agreement to the university to conduct their research using the JWST data.

Spectral variability of brown dwarfs holds the key to understanding their atmospheric properties. This project aims to determine the mechanism that produces brown dwarf variability and determine what drives the variability (evolving clouds, dynamical chemistry, both?).

Direct detection of molecular gas reservoir in the circumgalactic medium of a brightest cluster galaxy

Agreement Number:

23JWGO2A03

Duration: from Feb 15, 2024 to Mar 31, 2026
Description:

Following the JWST ERS and Cycle 2 GO Announcement of Opportunity published on July 6, 2023, the CSA is providing funding via a Grant Agreement to the university to conduct their research using the JWST data.

To begin to unravel the formation history of massive galaxies, this pilot project will provide a first comprehensive view towards a target nearly four billion light years away. The target, situated in the core of a galaxy cluster, is forming stars at an unusually high rate while harbouring one of the largest known molecular gas reservoirs in a cluster core. This project will shed light on the growth of the target massive galaxy by examining the physical conditions of the gas fueling its star formation.

Putting it all Together. Dynamics and Chemistry Probed Through Transmission Spectroscopy of a Cloud-Free Exoplanet

Agreement Number:

23JWGO2A06

Duration: from Feb 15, 2024 to Mar 31, 2027
Description:

Following the JWST ERS and Cycle 2 GO Announcement of Opportunity published on July 6, 2023, the CSA is providing funding via a Grant Agreement to the university to conduct their research using the JWST data.

This program will analyze the observation of one transit of the cloud-free hot-Jupiter WASP-96b with NIRSpec/G395H to determine its atmosphere composition, and the effects of dynamics-induced chemistry. Because WASP-96b is cloudless, it is a prime target to study these effects. It has long been recognized that the atmosphere composition of hot-Jupiters can inform us about their formation and migration processes. These observations will provide some of the tightest-yet constraints on the formation history of an exoplanet.
