Develop a minimally viable product Check-Mates mobile application for helping children with emotional regulation in school.

The project focus is to convert the prototype Commercial Off The Shelf (COTS) proof of concept, which is limited to the audible range (up to 20 kHz) into a engineered rapid prototype operating in the ultrasonic frequency range. Two units require engineering - beacons installed in known locations that transmit the ultrasonic signal, and trackers that receive beacon ultrasonic signals to compute position of a tagged asset.

The CAR-T production process is highly complex and assays are not currently available to accurately predict the potency of the CAR-T cell product. This project will develop and verify a panel of protein biomarkers that measure both T-cell activation and metabolic programming in order to assay CAR-T potency using cytometry time of flight mass spectrometry (CyTOF).

Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is a leading cause of global disability. Cognitive remediation, a behaviorally based cognitive training method, improves performance on cognitive tests in MDD, but benefits have limited transfer to real world settings. Immersive virtual reality (VR), which presents tasks in interactive and naturalistic environments, has the potential to enhance the real world applicability of cognitive remediation. As part of a previous R&D effort, the University of British Columbia and NRC have collaboratively developed the bWell Cognitive Care Platform for Depression (bWell-D), which addresses cognitive deficits associated with MDD. In this Project, a pilot randomized controlled trial (RCT) will be conducted to acquire evidence that bWell-D meets feasibility criteria to advance to a largescale definitive RCT to fully validate clinical efficacy. Preliminary estimates of efficacy and outcome variance will optimize the protocols for the large-scale trial. Comprehensive datasets will be collected, including clinical rating scales, functional/quality of life measures, neurocognitive testing, highly grained VR exercise logs and electroencephalography (EEG). Using multivariate and machine learning techniques, brain based predictors and mediators of cognitive change will also be examined, with the potential to open the door to individualized remediation strategies.

The number of Canadians aging in place is projected to increase in the coming decades. Indoor environmental quality (IEQ) standards are based on younger, working Canadians and they do not necessarily support health, comfort and well-being for seniors. This project will develop guidance on suitable indoor environmental conditions to support Canadians aging in place. The study comprises a literature review to establish knowledge gaps related to seniors’ perceptions of IEQ and how IEQ impacts their health; a survey process to determine occupant perceptions of their home environment and drivers for leaving their home; and a long-term nationwide monitoring campaign to establish actual in-home conditions. Collectively, the study components will provide a comprehensive picture of IEQ in Canadian homes and determine which type and level of interventions are required to better support Canadians aging in place.
