This project supports the Africa Disaster Risk Financing program’s multi-donor trust fund. It seeks to strengthen the resilience of vulnerable communities, women, and girls to climate disasters in six African countries by adopting ex-ante climate disaster risk financing instruments.

The project aims to reduce barriers to education and meet the needs of young girls and boys in terms of nutrition, overall health and sexual and reproductive health and rights in the Diffa, Tahoua, and Tillabéry regions of Niger. Project activities include: (1) Sensitizing girls, boys, and their communities on sexual and reproductive health and rights, including prevention of gender-based violence, female genital mutilation, and early marriage; (2) providing adequate sanitation, water, and hygiene services; (3) training adolescent girls on nutrition, health, and communication for social behavior change; and (4) sensitizing communities on the importance of education for all children, especially girls. The number of direct beneficiaries of the project is estimated at 80,810, including 54,790 girls in the Diffa, Tahoua and Tillabéry regions.

This project aims to improve the resilience of vulnerable populations, including women and children, to climate shocks in Africa. Project activities include: (1) developing tools and disseminating guidelines on gender equality in disaster risk management; (2) providing support to the African Risk Capacity (ARC) member states for monitoring and reporting on the implementation of disaster response, including gender activities and gender-disaggregated data; and (3) providing technical assistance to national experts to establish a network of trainers on gender in disaster risk management. The project seeks to support the ARC to expand beyond the current member countries to reach all 55 African Union (AU) member countries.

The project seeks to improve the climate resilience of marginalized communities, particularly women and youth, and ecosystems that are structurally vulnerable to climate change, through nature-based climate solutions in six Lake Chad Basin protected areas registered under the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands in Cameroon, Chad, and Niger. The project directly supports 315,000 people (75% women) through improved resilient agriculture practices and communitarian conflict resolution processes. Two million people will benefit from new or improved ecosystem services by restoring 10,000 hectares of wetlands. Also, 2.7 million people displaced due to conflict (60% children and 25% women) will indirectly benefit as the project contributes to regional stabilization strategies, including peaceful conflict resolution and communitarian processes.

This project aims to strengthen the effectiveness of law enforcement agencies to prevent, detect, investigate and respond to chemical and explosives terrorism incidents. Project activities include: (1) outreach with relevant national decision makers and senior-level representatives of beneficiary countries; (2) delivery of training to facilitate intelligence sharing on national and regional chemical and explosive threats; (3) verification activities for counterterrorism intelligence; (4) development of tailored country-specific action plans; (5) delivery of training and capacity-building sessions; and (6) delivery of an in-person “Global Congress on Chemical Security and Emerging Threats”.

The Global Code of Conduct for Gathering and Using Information about Systematic and Conflict-Related Sexual Violence is a code of conduct and standards for the safe, effective and ethical gathering and use of victim or survivor information on systematic and conflict-related sexual violence. A system developed through global consultations, with survivors at the heart of its work. The creation of the Code responds to the proliferation of harmful information-gathering approaches that are not sensitive to survivor trauma, are uncoordinated and are ineffective for documentation purposes. These harmful practices include re-traumatization, personal security, violations of privacy rights, and failed justice outcomes.

This Project focuses on building awareness and implementing the Code with key stakeholders, such as investigation authorities, humanitarian actors, civil society, media, policy-makers, governments and other organizations and individuals working on information-gathering with survivors. Using the Code properly means integrating it into systems, processes, policies, contracts and terms of reference of investigation teams. Targeted activities can occur in Colombia, Iraq, Myanmar, Syria and Ukraine, among others.

This project aims to help law enforcement agencies in Ukraine enhance their effectiveness in investigating serious crimes in line with a human rights-based and gender-sensitive approach. The project supports the State Bureau of Investigations of Ukraine (SBI) the Security Service of Ukraine (SSU), and other governmental stakeholders and community experts to improve criminal justice and law enforcement policies to meet human rights and Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) commitments.

Project activities include: (1) conducting a series of trainings on investigative and prosecutorial aspects of serious crime within SBI competency; (2) providing technical and expert support to SBI staff to enhance their capacity to use criminal analysis tools and approaches for investigating serious crimes; (3) providing SBI staff with access to foreign experience in combating serious cross-border crimes; (4) conducting a series of trainings for investigators and prosecutors on best practices in investigating serious crimes; (5) conducting a series of roundtables to develop recommendations on improving the legal basis for combating serious crime; and (6) conducting workshops to improve the strategic communications of the SSU and other criminal justice stakeholders in investigating and combating serious crime.

This grant represents Canada’s support to the UN Country-Based Pooled Funds, managed by OCHA, in Myanmar, Ukraine, Venezuela, Lebanon, Syria, Yemen, Ethiopia, Nigeria, and the Regionally-hosted Pooled Fund (Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger).

With the support of Canada and other donors, OCHA fulfills its mandate through activities that include: (1) strengthening humanitarian leadership; (2) establishing and overseeing coordination systems; (3) monitoring and reporting on humanitarian situations; (4) advocating on behalf of affected people; (5) supporting the assessment and prioritization of humanitarian needs and strategic planning; (6) promoting emergency preparedness; and (7) mobilizing funding for humanitarian assistance.
