DFATD’s International Scholarship Program wishes to support the recipient to enhance the international profile of Canada as a source of quality education and create interest abroad on Canada.

The purpose of the Indigenous Habitat Participation Program and the Salish Sea Initiative, is to support the participation of Indigenous peoples in activities relating to the conservation and protection of fish and fish habitat, including the development of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans’ (DFO) policies, program elements and regulations and the development of their technical capacity to support greater involvement in the conservation and protection of fish and fish habitat.

Protecting Wetlands and Grasslands in the Okanagan Region for Carbon Sequestration

This project aims to enhance equitable and inclusive learning outcomes for refugee, internally displaced and host community children and youth, particularly girls and adolescent girls, living in South Sudan and Uganda. The project supports community-based organizations led by refugees and internally-displaced people (IDP) with technical and financial support. Project activities include: (1) facilitating an innovative, self-directed capacity assessment tool for refugee- and IDP-led organizations working on gender-responsive education; (2) designing and delivering training modules and providing technical assistance based on themes identified in assessments and on self-identified institutional gaps; (3) providing core, direct and multi-year small grants to refugee- and IDP-led organizations to help strengthen them and support gender-responsive education programming; (4) training women in refugee- and IDP-led organizations on effective leadership, human rights and peace-building; and (5) facilitating community engagement and dialogues with host communities, state institutions and policy makers on inclusive, gender-responsive education for refugee and internally-displaced children and youth. The project expects to reach an estimated at 132,040 beneficiaries, including 61,400 refugees, internally-displaced persons and host community children and youth.

The project aims to channel the creativity and the productivity of a new generation of students and young professionals, especially women, to contribute to poverty reduction and inclusive growth within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) region. More specifically, it seeks to deepen the knowledge and develop practical skills of students or mid-level professionals from the ASEAN region in areas of study that contribute to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Project activities include: (1) the provision of short-term (up to 8 months) scholarships for study/research for ASEAN students in Canadian post-secondary academic institutions in areas of study that are aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals; (2) the creation of institutional agreements between Canadian and ASEAN post-secondary academic institutions; (3) the provision of short-term scholarships for ASEAN mid-career professionals working in sectors that contribute to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development to enhance their knowledge and skills in their area of work; and (4) the creation of an alumni network.

The Community of Democracies provides Member States with a forum in which to work together to learn from each other and identify global priorities for diplomatic action to advance and defend democracy, including through collective diplomatic action at the UN and in other multilateral fora. In addition to facilitating joint diplomatic action, the Community provides an international forum that facilitates mutual dialogue, learning, and exchange of experiences among members and with civil society. In line with the Community’s Strategic Plan for 2018-2023, Members of the Governing Council, with support from the Community’s Permanent Secretariat, will work with civil society to encourage adherence to the Warsaw Declaration principles; provide sustained support for key democratic consolidation in transitioning countries outside the Community, and; increase and deepen dialogue on the challenges that they face as democracies.
