Grants and Contributions
About this information
In June 2016, as part of the Open Government Action Plan, the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat (TBS) committed to increasing the transparency and usefulness of grants and contribution data and subsequently launched the Guidelines on the Reporting of Grants and Contributions Awards, effective April 1, 2018.
The rules and principles governing government grants and contributions are outlined in the Treasury Board Policy on Transfer Payments. Transfer payments are transfers of money, goods, services or assets made from an appropriation to individuals, organizations or other levels of government, without the federal government directly receiving goods or services in return, but which may require the recipient to provide a report or other information subsequent to receiving payment. These expenditures are reported in the Public Accounts of Canada. The major types of transfer payments are grants, contributions and \'other transfer payments\'.
Included in this category, but not to be reported under proactive disclosure of awards, are (1) transfers to other levels of government such as Equalization payments as well as Canada Health and Social Transfer payments. (2) Grants and contributions reallocated or otherwise redistributed by the recipient to third parties; and (3) information that would normally be withheld under the Access to Information Act and the Privacy Act.

Proteomics and structure-function relationships of pea proteins to understand the fate of proteins and impacts on their functionality during protein ingredient production
988608
Pea proteins are now a major ingredient used in plant-based foods, with Canada being recognized as a major producer and exporter of dry peas. Pea protein concentrates and isolates are a complex mixture of proteins, the structure and composition of which directly impacts the functionality of pea protein ingredients, such as their ability to remain soluble, bind water, and form and stabilize emulsions and foams. Protein functionality thus affects the overall food quality. Pea protein structure and composition is affected by the use of different isolation methods (e.g., dry- and wet?fractionation), processing conditions, and different pea varieties, which in turn determines the functionality of these as ingredients in food. A clear understanding of how these different factors are interrelated is currently lacking, particularly for commercially-prepared samples. This project will combine analyses of protein composition, structure and functionality focused on commercially-relevant pea protein concentrates and isolates. This project will help reveal how different processing conditions affect pea protein structure and composition and, in-turn, functionality. This knowledge could be used by industry to optimize the manufacture of pea protein ingredients with improved function, sensory and nutritive properties.

Assessment of Value Added Coproduct Options for Algal Wastewater
986179
The proposed project will be focused on conducting feasibility studies, at R&D scale, on creating multiple coproducts from the waste stream. Specifically, the project will include:
1. Researching the specifications of low, medium, and high value coproducts, conducting chemical analysis of Mara’s waste stream and coproducts, with particular focus on the nutritional value and the specifications required by the relevant product.
2. Reviewing literature and researching methods to separate lipid fractions from aqueous phase, performing feasibility trials to extract high omega-3 lipid fractions from the waste stream.
3. Optimizing ultrafiltration process to improve cost efficiency for producing medium value coproducts at scale.
