Grants and Contributions
About this information
In June 2016, as part of the Open Government Action Plan, the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat (TBS) committed to increasing the transparency and usefulness of grants and contribution data and subsequently launched the Guidelines on the Reporting of Grants and Contributions Awards, effective April 1, 2018.
The rules and principles governing government grants and contributions are outlined in the Treasury Board Policy on Transfer Payments. Transfer payments are transfers of money, goods, services or assets made from an appropriation to individuals, organizations or other levels of government, without the federal government directly receiving goods or services in return, but which may require the recipient to provide a report or other information subsequent to receiving payment. These expenditures are reported in the Public Accounts of Canada. The major types of transfer payments are grants, contributions and \'other transfer payments\'.
Included in this category, but not to be reported under proactive disclosure of awards, are (1) transfers to other levels of government such as Equalization payments as well as Canada Health and Social Transfer payments. (2) Grants and contributions reallocated or otherwise redistributed by the recipient to third parties; and (3) information that would normally be withheld under the Access to Information Act and the Privacy Act.

Cognitive assessment and training in older adults with brain machine interface and virtual reality
995132
Research has shown that engaging in cognitively stimulating activities and habits can help stave off dementia. Digital technologies can be used as tools to enhance our cognitive abilities. Compared to mobile applications, virtual reality (VR) holds particular promise due to its ability to immersively engage the user with multisensory stimulation. Providing simulated real-world activities in the VR environment allows repeat practice of skills and strategies in deficit areas, promoting improvement in the long term. VR combined with sensors such as electroencephalography (EEG) enables training custom to the user, such as neurofeedback. Neurofeedback is a technique that presents real-time feedback of a user’s own brain activity to reinforce healthy brain function. NRC and ATR will investigate the use of VR and neurofeedback (via Brain Machine Interface (BMI)) for cognitive assessment and training. The project will build on previous work, where we have shown that BMI combined with VR can improve attention switching in the performance of a simulated everyday task, in healthy adults. In this project, we are proposing to test this technology in groups of older adults (healthy, mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and dementia), where we aim to demonstrate that 1) VR-based training is valid, feasible, usable and acceptable, 2) VR-based training results in quantifiable cognitive improvement in everyday functioning and 3) EEG measures related to cognitive performance can be identified.
