This contribution supports the scientific basis for development of an active management plan to retain populations of large Carnivores within the Beaver Hills Biosphere Reserve. Through identifying source populations of large carnivores and corridors within the Biosphere, identifying sources of human-carnivore conflicts and human caused mortality of carnivores, and providing recommendations on mitigations, this project will improve natural regulatory processes within the region and improve the health of ungulate populations in Elk Island National Park.

The Polestar payload aims to address outstanding questions on the mechanism of space anemia. Polestar will test three key hypotheses: 1. Older red blood cells (RBC) are preferentially destroyed in space; 2. Space can induce a shift from adult to fetal hemoglobin; and 3. Space induces RBC morphological changes, causing RBC dysfunction. Using blood and air samples collected from the SpaceX Polaris Dawn five-day mission, Polestar will measure the effect of high-altitude space and space radiation on space hemolysis in four astronauts compared to four age-related and sex-matched ground controls. Polestar will investigate the subpopulation of hemolyzed RBCs, hemoglobin gene-switching, and RBC anomalies, using state-of-the-art methods often applied for the first time to space samples. Polestar leverages private space missions to speed up critical space life science advances.

The shelter will undergo retrofits to increase its capacity and create designated spaces for harm reduction and cultural programming. These upgrades will include areas for land-based learning, a kitchen for meal preparation, enhanced safety measures, and dedicated cultural spaces such as a sacred fire area.

The project is designed to raise awareness, educate, and empower at-risk individuals and service providers about Red Flag laws and other protection and safety tools. It aims to align with the initiative's objectives by enhancing knowledge and understanding of these critical safety measures. This includes providing actionable information, fostering a supportive community atmosphere, and ensuring community groups are well informed and equipped to utilize these protections effectively.

This project seeks to further adopt this shared program to integrate education about Canada’s new Red Flag laws into the campaign to expand public knowledge, reach high-risk populations, and prevent firearm-related harm before it occurs.

The project focuses on ecosystem changes driven by beaver activity across aquatic and terrestrial environments and their impacts on community wellbeing. Using a community monitoring app, the research aims to connect ecological changes to Inuvialuit wellbeing, aligning scientific monitoring with holistic Inuvialuit knowledge systems. It emphasizes the interconnectedness of freshwater and terrestrial ecosystems, particularly in the context of food sovereignty and security, as beaver activity can affect access to important subsistence resources like fish and terrestrial fauna.
