Grants and Contributions

• Canada’s Strategy for Patient-Oriented Research (SPOR) is a national coalition of federal, provincial and territorial partners (patients and informal caregivers, provincial health authorities, health centres, charities, philanthropic organizations, private sector, etc.) dedicated to the integration of research into care. Its vision is that by 2025, Canada will have demonstrably improved health outcomes and enhanced the health care experience for patients through the integration of evidence at all levels of the health care system.
• As outlined in the SPOR Patient Engagement Framework, patient-oriented research refers to a continuum of research that engages patients as partners, focusses on patient-identified priorities and improves patient outcomes. This research, conducted by multidisciplinary teams in partnership with relevant stakeholders, aims to apply the knowledge generated to improve healthcare systems and practices.
• As a partner in SPOR, CIHR will provide bridge funding for fundable applications that are below the competition funding cut-off and aligned with the SPOR vision, the SPOR Patient Engagement Framework and the SPOR Capacity Development Framework. Categories are described in the Funds Available section.

• The Barer-Flood Prize is named in honour of the leadership, vision and innovative contributions of the first two Scientific Directors of CIHR’s Institute of Health Services and Policy Research (IHSPR), Morris Barer and Colleen Flood. In their roles as Scientific Directors, Dr. Barer and Dr. Flood made tremendous contributions towards advancing the field of health services and policy research in Canada, building a community of world-class researchers, and designing innovative new programs that foster evidence-informed decision making and improved health and health care for Canadians.
• The Barer-Flood Prize is intended to recognize and support the research excellence of Canadian Senior-Career Investigators working within the mandate of IHSPR. This prize is a supplemental grant to support research and/or knowledge mobilization, and has to be used according to the CIHR Application Administration Guide. The prize is non-renewable.

• The CIHR Institute of Musculoskeletal Health and Arthritis (CIHR-IMHA) will fund applications that are determined to be relevant to the mandate and research priority areas of CIHR-IMHA as described below:

The CIHR Institute of Nutrition, Metabolism and Diabetes (INMD) will provide funding for applications in which the objectives and aims are determined to be largely and directly relevant to the INMD mandate as described below:
o CIHR-INMD supports research to enhance health in relation to diet, digestion, excretion, and metabolism; and to address causes, prevention, screening, diagnosis, treatment, support systems, and palliation for a wide range of conditions and problems associated with hormone, digestive system, kidney, and liver.
• These grants afford principal investigators an opportunity to resubmit their research proposal without the loss of momentum, staff or trainees.

The Institute of Population and Public Health (IPPH) will fund applications that are determined to be relevant to the mandate and research priority areas of CIHR-IPPH as described below:

Healthy Cities: Applications must be aligned with CIHR’s Healthy Cities Research Initiative (HCRI) and be focused on population health intervention research and/or implementation science as it relates to urban environments.
Equitable AI: Applications must be aligned with IPPH’s Equitable AI Initiative and focused on exploring the use of artificial intelligence (AI) approaches or development of AI tools, to address public health challenges and promote health equity (*). IPPH is particularly interested in projects exploring the compounding influences of AI on public health at the intersections of various social determinants of health, including but not limited to sex and gender, race, ethnicity, Indigenous identity, and disability.
Global Health Policy: Applications must be focused on research areas within the mandate of IPPH and must be aligned with CIHR’s definition of global health and with the Canadian Coalition for Global Health Research’s Principles for Global Health Research.
* Health Equity: The term ‘health equity’ is used to refer to the belief that “all people can reach their full health potential and should not be disadvantaged from attaining it because of their race, ethnicity, gender, age, social class, language and minority status, socio-economic status, or other socially-determined circumstance.”

The specific objectives of this funding opportunity are to:

• Generate relevant and timely evidence about the impacts of innovations in how healthcare systems and services are organized, delivered, governed, held accountable, financed, and/or funded on the Quadruple Aim goals and equity, and which innovations have the most potential for transformative impact in the Canadian context;
• Respond to a policy and/or decision maker’s evidence needs and help to inform decisions, policies or actions that advance achievement of the Quadruple Aim goals and health equity for all; and
• Catalyze future transformative, collaborative research between researchers, policy and/or decision makers, healthcare providers and patients that can be pursued through CIHR’s Project Grant competition or other relevant strategic funding competitions.

The specific objectives of this funding opportunity are to:

Research, identify, address and/or share best and wise program and policy practices, and/or critical knowledge gaps, including the collection and management and analysis of high-quality and real-time data, related to addressing the immediate impacts and future consequences of COVID-19, among distinct Indigenous populations, communities and individuals;
Research and enable a comprehensive and timely understanding of the implications and impact of COVID-19, including emerging variants and the long COVID condition, within distinct Indigenous communities, and their relevance for public health, health systems and policy;
Identify, implement, evaluate and/or share culturally safe, distinctions-based and Indigenous-led and/or Indigenous community-led solutions to address the COVID-19 pandemic and its consequences, among Indigenous communities;
Accelerate distinctions-based and Indigenous-led and/or Indigenous community-led research and knowledge mobilization activities related to COVID-19 within the context of Indigenous health while supporting Indigenous community capacity development in research and knowledge mobilization; and
Expand or adapt existing programs and infrastructure, in Indigenous communities to support capacity development of Indigenous communities to design, lead, and meaningfully participate in culturally safe responses to the current COVID-19 pandemic and/or future pandemic preparedness.

The specific objectives of this funding opportunity are to:
