The specific objectives of this funding opportunity are to:

Generate relevant and timely evidence about the impacts of innovations in how healthcare systems and services are organized, delivered, governed, held accountable, financed, and/or funded on the Quadruple Aim goals and equity, and which innovations have the most potential for transformative impact in the Canadian context;
Respond to a policy and/or decision maker's evidence needs and help to inform decisions, policies or actions that advance achievement of the Quadruple Aim goals and health equity for all; and
Catalyze future transformative, collaborative research between researchers, policy and/or decision makers, healthcare providers and patients that can be pursued through CIHR's Project Grant competition or other relevant strategic funding competitions.

• Respond to a policy and/or decision maker’s evidence needs and help to inform decisions, policies or actions that advance achievement of the Quadruple Aim goals and health equity for all; and
• Catalyze future transformative, collaborative research between researchers, policy and/or decision makers, healthcare providers and patients that can be pursued through CIHR’s Project Grant competition or other relevant strategic funding competitions.

The specific objectives of this funding opportunity are to:

Generate data and evidence to monitor and evaluate the potential benefits, harms, and unintended consequences of alcohol regulation on population health and health equity;
Generate intervention-related evidence to address the needs of knowledge users in this space, including for regulatory aims;
Facilitate consideration and application of new evidence to inform ongoing and future development of policies, practices and programs related to alcohol;
Support partnerships between researchers and knowledge users to rapidly inform policies and practices related to prevention, harm reduction, and treatment of alcohol use;
Encourage evaluation of interventions, population health intervention research, and implementation science approaches that consider sub-populations and/or the biological, structural, and social determinants of problematic alcohol use.

• The CIHR Institute of Infection and Immunity (CIHR-III) will fund applications that are determined to be specifically relevant to their mandate with a primary focus on biomedical research in which the objective and aims are directed towards building foundational knowledge in immunology and/or infectious diseases. This priority announcement will prioritize funding for research in the following research areas:
o Infection:
• Zoonotic or vector-borne transmission of pathogens in the context of Global Climate Change;
• Understanding functional genomics and/or molecular epidemiology of emerging/re-emerging pathogens;
• Resistance to fungal infections and/or the role of bacteriophages in combatting antimicrobial resistance (AMR)
o Immunity:
• Immune mechanisms involved in the development of trained innate immunity;
• Immune mechanisms involved in the development and maintenance of tissue-specific immunity;
• Metabolic regulation of immune cells and processes (immunometabolism)
• Should there be no eligible applications relevant to the research areas identified above, III will fund applications that are relevant to its mandate with a primary focus on biomedical research in which the objective and aims are directed towards building foundational knowledge in immunology and/or infectious diseases.

• Canada’s Strategy for Patient-Oriented Research (SPOR) is a national coalition of federal, provincial and territorial partners (patients and informal caregivers, provincial health authorities, health centres, charities, philanthropic organizations, private sector, etc.) dedicated to the integration of research into care. Its vision is that by 2025, Canada will have demonstrably improved health outcomes and enhanced the health care experience for patients through the integration of evidence at all levels of the health care system.
• As outlined in the SPOR Patient Engagement Framework, patient-oriented research refers to a continuum of research that engages patients as partners, focusses on patient-identified priorities and improves patient outcomes. This research, conducted by multidisciplinary teams in partnership with relevant stakeholders, aims to apply the knowledge generated to improve healthcare systems and practices.
• As a partner in SPOR, CIHR will provide bridge funding for fundable applications that are below the competition funding cut-off and aligned with the SPOR vision, the SPOR Patient Engagement Framework and the SPOR Capacity Development Framework.
