The objectives of the extension are aligned with the Canadian Immunization Research Network (CIRN) 2016 and the CIRN: COVID-19 Vaccine Readiness are:
• To maintain the baseline activities of CIRN. This includes support for its infrastructure of networks to facilitate collaborative research among vaccine and immunization researchers, clinicians, public health professionals and policy makers.
• To support CIRN’s COVID-19 activities related to critical research in the research areas of the COVID-19 Vaccine Readiness grant (vaccine clinical trials [incl. vaccine safety and effectiveness studies]; population prioritization and modelling; vaccine hesitancy and uptake; and coordination and information sharing. The research activities within these research areas will address the evolving COVID-19 vaccine research needs of Canada, and will provide vaccine-related research outcomes to inform effective, equitable and timely COVID-19 public health decision-making .

The ICS Program is designed to foster community development by providing grants and awards to individuals and organizations for the purposes of:

• Enabling research and knowledge translation activities where the circumstances fall outside of CIHR's current suite of funding programs.

• Supporting individuals and organizations whose goals are consistent with CIHR and its Institutes' vision, mandate and strategic directions.

The ICS Program is not intended to support the direct cost of research (e.g., pilot projects, feasibility studies or operating grants), principal and co-investigator salaries or research equipment.

CIHR and other funding agencies have invested heavily in the establishment of cohorts, databases, cohort catalogues, and data platforms. As a result, many high-quality data sets exist that contain a wealth of information and have the potential to answer research questions that go beyond those for which the data were originally collected or for which the data has been used to date. Examples of such resources include, but are not limited to, the Maternal-Infant Research on Environmental Chemicals (MIREC) study, the Canadian Healthy Infant Longitudinal Development (CHILD) study, the Research Advancement through Cohort Cataloguing and Harmonization (ReACH) initiative, the Canadian Institute of Health Information (CIHI) Dynamic Cohort of Complex, High System Users and the Canadian Urban Environmental Health Research Consortium (CANUE). There is also the potential to link diverse datasets, thus enabling explorations of novel associations and interactions between human, environmental, social and clinical factors.
• The CIHR Institute of Human Development, Child and Youth Health (CIHR-IHDCYH) will provide funding for applications or parts of applications that use data from existing Canadian-based cohorts, databases, cohort catalogues, and data platforms, and are relevant to its mandate:
o As a lifecycle-based Institute, IHDCYH has a broad mandate that covers defined time periods and a wide range of issues pertaining to human development: pre-conception; fertilization; embryonic and fetal development; the health of the mother and father; and the health and development of infants, children and youth.

• The CIHR Institute of Human Development, Child and Youth Health (CIHR-IHDCYH) will provide bridge funding for an application by an early career researcher that is relevant to the Institute’s mandate:
o As a lifecycle-based Institute, IHDCYH has a broad mandate that covers defined time periods and a wide range of issues pertaining to human development: pre-conception; fertilization; embryonic and fetal development; the health of the mother and father; and the health and development of infants, children and youth.
• Bridge funding can be used at the NPAs discretion to catalyze work on their proposed project in the manner they feel best moves forward their research program, for example, collection of pilot data, demonstration of feasibility, or work to address peer review comments.
