The initiative entitled FAMKAD (Fanm Kanpe Ak Diyite - Women and Girls Standing with Dignity for Our Sexual and Reproductive Rights) aims to improve the exercise of the right to health of Haitians, particularly to sexual health and rights and reproductive workers (SDSR) of women and adolescents. It will be implemented at the departmental level in the Southeast and at the national level in Port-au-Prince (PaP) over a four-year period by a consortium of three Canadian organizations: CARE Canada, the Centre for International Health Cooperation and (CCISD) and Lawyers Without Borders Canada (CBSA). It will also involve CARE Haiti and two Haitian organizations with specific areas of intervention: Kay Fanm, a women's rights organization, and the Association for the Promotion of the Haitian Family (PROFAMIL), (IPPF) (International Planned Parenthood Federation).
The initiative will use a multi-sector, multi-sector approach, based on two components: 1) strengthening the continuum of care, integrating the participation of rights holders, including civil society organizations (CSOs), women's and adolescent rights organizations (ODDFA) and communities, through the development and provision of a rights-friendly set of sexual and reproductive health services and care (SSRs) tailored to age and gender for adolescent girls and women and managed according to principles of inclusive governance; and 2) active social mobilization of parents, men, adolescents and opinion leaders, and the strengthening of women's and adolescent sDRS knowledge to ensure positive social transformation in the targeted areas, Share; and, on the other hand, strengthening the capacity of civil society organizations (CSOs) to effectively promote RSDs nationally and internationally, to provide rSD and gender equality (EG) services, and to support victims of gender-based violence (VBG) in their efforts to call for the implementation of their RSDs.

The initiative is part of Canada's International Feminist Assistance Policy (IAP) and its international commitments. By focusing on women and adolescents and prioritizing EG and inclusion, the initiative meets many of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and will specifically contribute to SDG 3.7 to ensure access to access to sustainable sexual and reproductive health care services; SDG 3.c to significantly increase the health budget and the recruitment, development, training and retention of health workers in developing countries; and SDG 5.6 to ensure access to sexual and reproductive health care for all and ensure that everyone can exercise their reproductive rights. In addition, the initiative is in line with international commitments signed by both Canada and Haiti, including: the Family Planning Initiative 2020 (FP2020), which aims to ensure universal access to SSR services and related rights in 2030. In addition, like Canada, Haiti is a signatory to several international and regional texts promoting and protecting the EG and human rights, including women's and adolescent SRRs, including the Convention on the Elimination of All discrimination against women (CEDEF), and the Inter-American Convention on the Prevention, Punishment and Elimination of Violence Against Women, known as the Belém do Para Convention.

February 2021 - Despite progress towards sustainable political stability, the impact of more than three decades of insecurity, exacerbated by frequently recurring drought, increasing seasonal flooding, an ongoing historic infestation of desert locusts, and the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, has left much of the population without access to basic services and ever more vulnerable to the next shock. Internal displacement remains at record levels, with an estimated 2.6 million internally displaced people (IDPs) living in more than 2,400 sites across the country, and severe food insecurity is projected to increase in 2021, as a La Niña weather event is expected to bring renewed drought conditions early in the year. Altogether, an estimated 5.9 million people in Somalia will require humanitarian assistance in 2021.

With GAC’s support, World Vision is improving access to healthcare, including treatment of acute malnutrition, safe water and sanitation, and protection services amongst crisis-affected IDPs and host communities in Somalia’s Bay region. Project activities include: (1) providing training and support for local health workers and facilities; (2) expanding water supply systems in IDP settlements; and, (3) working with local stakeholders to improve reporting and response mechanisms for sexual and gender-based violence and other protection concerns.

The objectives of the Program are to; support the development and utilization of effective approaches to address social issues and challenges;
develop, exchange and apply knowledge, tools and resources that address social needs of individuals, families and communities; foster partnerships and networks to address existing and emerging social issues; recognize and support the ability of not-for-profit organizations to identify and address social development priorities; and, recognize and promote community engagement initiatives (e.g. volunteerism, corporate social responsibility, innovation, partnerships, coalitions) that mobilize community assets and develop capacities and resources for action.
