The SSHRC Doctoral Scholarships aim to develop research skills and assist in the training of highly qualified personnel by supporting students who demonstrate a high standard of scholarly achievement in undergraduate and graduate studies in the social sciences and humanities.

To be eligible to the competition, applications must address ALL three (3) objectives AND respond to at least one (1) research area; AND to at least one (1) of its sub-research areas;

Understand the extent and impact of the indirect and wider health consequences of COVID-19 and the resilience of people of Canada and/or globally; AND (Updated: 2021-09-16)
Identify effective interventions (policy, practice and/or models of care) to ameliorate the wider impacts of COVID-19 and improve preparedness for future health emergencies and pandemics; AND
Generate evidence related to one or more marginalized population(s), including for instance: communities marginalized by race; First Nations, Inuit, Métis and Urban Indigenous Peoples; communities historically excluded from research; those experiencing health inequity; persons with disabilities and individuals across diverse health status (e.g. high risk populations, individuals with comorbid conditions); those experiencing gendered impacts of the pandemic; and those in life stages that have been underrepresented in research (e.g. pregnant people, children, older adults). Across all populations, researchers are encouraged to consider a lifecycle approach (from preconception to older adulthood).

The specific objectives of this funding opportunity are:
• To provide recognition and funding to academic researchers;
• To provide a reliable supply of highly skilled and qualified researchers.

The specific objectives of this funding opportunity are to continue international multi-country, multi-disciplinary, cross-site collaborations that support:

• A developmental origins of health and disease (DOHaD) approach to the generation of evidence and identification of opportunities for research and intervention, data interoperability and improvement of harmonization practices as part of a longer-term strategy for non-communicable disease (NCD) prevention;
• A knowledge mobilization strategy that will embed the evidence generated into policy and other decision-making, nationally and internationally;
• A learning platform and training environment for early career stage researchers that will support career pathways in research, knowledge mobilization and policy development related to DOHaD; and,
• The improvement of health outcomes, including health equity, particularly related to women and men’s health preconception, during pregnancy, early life and childhood by targeting early exposures and early development.
