In the implementation of COVID-19 vaccine efforts, CEPI will ensure that awardees addressing sex- and gender-based differences following the WHO’s 2016 Guidance for Managing Ethical Issues in Infectious Disease Outbreaks throughout the research and development process.

•Propose areas for consideration for revisions to regulation of vaccination in Canada, including routine and responsive vaccination goals.

Sex and gender differences exist in the objectives above, making sex and/or gender issues an important component of this research initiative. CIHR will require applicants to consider sex as a biological variable and gender as a socio-cultural factor in their research.

The project will use a restorative approach and will be gender and culturally responsive. Programming will be delivered collaboratively with other community partners to respond to the unique needs of these girls through a wraparound approach addressing issues such as mental health problems, addictions, trauma and violence, lack of education and employment, etc.

Enhancing accountability for police-related violence and sexual gender-based violence throughout the Kenyan electoral period in Kakamega and Busia Counties through documentation, training of human rights monitors and journalists and public awareness campaigns

Improving police assistance to women experiencing gender-based violence in public spaces, through capacity-building for police officers in Oaxaca

Protecting survivors of sexual and gender-based violence in Papua New Guinea by providing information and essential resources to keep safe houses operating during COVID-19.

Enhancing the Health, Social and Legal Protection of Women and Girls from Gender Based Violence during COVID-19 in Chitungwiza and Hopley

Through the support of 740 volunteer placements, the project not only increases the participation of Canadians in international development and key global issues, but also enhances the performance of 45 partners in developing countries in implementing more inclusive, innovative, and environmentally sustainable development initiatives that advance gender equality. The project also works to increase the performance of partners in the education sector, due to the transformative power of education on populations, especially the most marginalized and vulnerable.

Project activities include: (1) recruiting and training Canadian experts and graduates on capacity building and cross-cutting development issues, including gender equality, human rights, and the environment; (2) engaging Canadian elementary and secondary school youth in key global issues and organizing public engagement activities promoting the results achieved by partners and volunteers; (3) developing or improving training programs and policies, tools, pedagogical, management and governance methods that promote the inclusion of people in vulnerable or marginalized situations with targeted partners; (4) providing training or support to partner staff on gender equality, human rights, security, sexual and gender-based violence, sexual and reproductive health, inclusion and retention of girls; and (5) establishing special funds to enable local partners to improve the quality of education and respect for the environment and/or make educational initiatives more inclusive or gender-sensitive.
