•The Healthy Cities Research Initiative is a multi-institute initiative co-led by the Institute of Population and Public Health (IPPH), Institute of Aging (IA), Institute of Gender and Health (IGH), Institute of Health Services and Policy Research (IHSPR), Institute of Indigenous Peoples’ Health (IIPH), Institute of Musculoskeletal Health and Arthritis (IMHA), and the Institute of Nutrition, Metabolism and Diabetes (INMD).

This 35-month project will address organizational capacity needs to allow the organization to continue promoting social and systemic change towards gender equality. Organizational capacity needs will be enhanced through partnership, strategic planning, results-based management, and gender-based analysis.

This 45-month project aims to strengthen the organization's capacity to continue to promote social and systemic change in support of gender equality. Organizational capacity will be enhanced through human resources management, strategic planning, partnership development, collaboration, networking, and the development of a strategy to diversify the organization's revenue streams.

Project activities include: (1) providing psychosocial and legal support to vulnerable migrants and refugees; (2) providing multipurpose cash transfers to crisis-affected people; (3) distributing hygiene and gender-based violence prevention kits; and (4) providing sexual and reproductive health and rights support to vulnerable migrants and refugees

Project activities include: (1) providing training and materiel support to local health centres; and (2) coordinating activities to strengthen local response to sexual and gender-based violence.

Project activities include: (1) establishing community-based safe spaces and structures; (2) delivering comprehensive case management support services to vulnerable children, including child survivors of sexual and gender-based violence; (3) providing cash/voucher assistance to crisis-affected adolescents, youth and vulnerable households; (4) constructing gender-responsive community-latrines including handwashing stations in communities hosting IDPs; and (5) conducting hygiene promotion and sanitation awareness sessions for children, adolescents, households comprising IDPs, and host community members.

In 2020, assessments indicate that 7.7 million people are expected to require humanitarian assistance, including emergency food rations, treatment for life-threatening severe acute malnutrition and other healthcare services, and protection for vulnerable women and girls at grave risk of sexual and gender-based violence.

With GAC’s support, Save the Children Canada is providing nutrition and protection assistance to an estimated 152,000 conflict-affected people in Nigeria’s Borno state. Project activities include: (1) providing technical and materiel support to local health facilities to improve delivery of nutrition treatment services; (2) providing cash or other inputs to vulnerable households to combat malnutrition; and (3) implementing activities to strengthen referral and response systems for sexual and gender-based violence.

Project activities include: (1) supporting 7 SWAT systems and 1 waterpoint as well building latrines in 2 schools; (2) supporting community-based management of acute malnutrition, and providing messaging on Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF) best practices to 54,645 people; and (3) reaching 12,000 women, men, boys and girls with gender-based violence services and referral information.

The crisis in CAR is a protection crisis, with violence against civilians, particularly women and girls, and sexual and gender-based violence cases are common. Approximately 35% of the population is food insecure and only 50% of the population has access to clean water.

Although gaps exist across all sectors of the humanitarian response, protection is particularly critical to address needs arising from sexual and gender-based violence experienced while fleeing conflict and often continuing in the refugee settlements.
