March 2020 – Following the outbreak of violence in Northern Rakhine State in August 2017, more than 700,000 Rohingya people crossed from Myanmar into Bangladesh over a period of several months. Currently, there are approximately 855,000 Rohingya refugees living in 34 highly congested settlements in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh. The speed and scale of the influx has resulted in significant humanitarian needs.

With GAC’s support, Humanity & Inclusion (HI) is helping to respond to the immediate needs of refugees in Cox’s Bazar, focusing particularly on vulnerable households and persons with disabilities. Project activities include: (1) providing protection assistance through case management for individuals with specific needs; (2) extending psychosocial support for those affected by trauma; and (3) providing training to community health workers and community leaders on key sexual and reproductive health issues within the community.

With GAC’s support, the International Rescue Committee (IRC) is improving the health and safety of Rohingya women and girls through the provision of integrated sexual and reproductive health services and gender-based violence prevention and response. Project activities include: (1) delivering emergency obstetric, antenatal, delivery and postpartum services; (2) providing comprehensive abortion, family planning and sexually transmitted infection care; (3) offering quality support for survivors of gender-based violence; and (4) developing effective referral pathways for clinical and mental health care, psychosocial support and other health services.

Project activities include: (1) providing sexual and reproductive health services to approximately 2,000 vulnerable women and adolescent girls; (2) providing medical, mental health and psychosocial counselling to more than 3,000 people affected by the crisis; (3) providing training to health personnel on managing health care for the migrant population; and (4) providing training to community organizations on the right to health, gender equality, xenophobia, violence prevention, and sexual exploitation.

In addition to increasing the participation of Canadians in international development and key global issues, this project aims to increase the performance of professional agricultural organizations in implementing more inclusive, innovative and sustainable development initiatives that advance gender equality. The project aims to improve the productivity and profitability of family farms in these countries while strengthening the performance and governance of the organizations that support them.

The Yellen project - meaning 'light' in Bambara - works to enable women and adolescent girls in Kayes, one of the poorest and most underserved regions in Mali, to benefit from quality health services by improving their knowledge, increasing their decision-making power and their ability to influence their sexual and reproductive health and rights.

The project proposes an innovative model of collaboration to harmonize the work of health service actors at the state, civil society (especially women's groups) and decentralized community levels.

Project activities include: (1) supporting Mali's Ministry of Health and Social Affairs in the implementation of the Social Health Development Programme, specifically with regard to improving sexual and reproductive health and rights; (2) providing training and equipping health workers to deliver quality services that meet the specific needs of women and adolescent girls; and (3) constructing and rehabilitating community health centres and providing equipment and inputs for the delivery of sexual and reproductive health services, including family planning and emergency obstetric care.

The project aims to reach more than 540,000 women and adolescents. Management teams from three regional directorates (health, social development and solidarity economy, and promotion of women, children and family) and seven health districts from the Kayes region are also beneficiaries. Overall, 1,255,944 people from Kayes are reached by the project, dispersed in 951 villages, with a special focus on 300 villages.

The project focuses on gender equality, empowering women, and creating a safe environment for a life free of violence for women and girls. In addition to increasing the participation of Canadians in international development and key global issues in support of gender equality, the empowerment of women and girls, and inclusive governance, this project aims to strengthen the performance of 72 women's rights organizations and civil society organizations working for gender equality and the rights of marginalized groups so that they can better contribute to the evolution of norms and policies that discriminate against women and girls.

In addition to increasing engagement of Canadians in international development and key global issues, this project aims to increase the performance of developing country partners to deliver more inclusive, innovative and environmentally sustainable development initiatives that advance gender equality. The project responds to the needs identified by young women in the project countries, and is designed to foster and create innovative solutions for a more equitable and prosperous economy.

In addition to increasing the participation of Canadians in international development, particularly in the areas of gender equality, economic growth and inclusive governance, the project also aims to strengthen the capacity of more than 60 local civil society organizations and government partners, 72% of which are women's rights organizations, to deliver stronger programming in the areas of women's rights, access to justice, reduction of gender-based violence, and economic empowerment and leadership.
Project activities include : (1) developing organizational capacity building plans and initiatives on women's social inclusion, human rights and environmental sustainability for partners; (2) organizing pan-Canadian awareness campaigns and knowledge sharing activities focusing on women's rights, access to justice, violence against women, leadership, and economic and environmental justice; (3) creating special thematic funds to promote gender equality, economic empowerment, human rights, environmental sustainability and innovation; and (4) providing train to returned volunteers to continue to be champions of gender equality and advance women's rights after their placement.
