June 2025 –The health situation in Gaza remains critical due to ongoing hostilities which led to high numbers of casualties, injuries, and mass displacement. Health facilities are operating under severe constraints, with limited supplies, damaged infrastructure, and staff working under extreme pressure. The already fragile healthcare system is struggling to meet the growing needs, particularly in trauma care, maternal and child health, and infectious and chronic disease management. Ongoing support is crucial to sustain and restore urgent medical care and essential healthcare services.

With GAC's support, Union of Medical Care and Relief Organizations (UOSSM) helps reduce suffering, maintain human dignity, and save lives in communities experiencing humanitarian crises in Gaza.
Project activities include: (1) providing emergency health services especially for conflict-related injuries; (2) providing primary healthcare services including sexual and reproductive healthcare and mental health, maternal nutrition, and mental health and psychosocial support; (3) providing gender-based violence (GBV) medical and counselling services; and (4) distributing hygiene and dignity kits to displaced women and adolescent girls.

The grant is in support of costs associated with gathering and validating client data from the program for the Indigenous Justice Program’s (IJP) recidivism study.

Biofect Innovations is advancing a microbial platform to produce Brazzein, a protein-based sweetener, at commercial titers. We’ve engaged a research assistant to support our molecular-biology team in strain engineering and process optimization. Responsibilities include preparing reagents, running routine assays (e.g., PCR, small-scale fermentations), maintaining electronic lab notebooks, and managing consumables inventory. By freeing senior scientists for design work, this role will accelerate engineering cycles and strengthen data integrity for improved strain performance.

Toronto Fresh Food (TFF) is developing an AI-driven smart quality control and shelf-life prediction system to enhance meat processing efficiency and food safety. Using computer vision, machine learning, and IoT sensors, the project will enable real-time defect detection, predictive shelf-life modeling, and automated processing optimization. This innovation aims to reduce waste, improve food quality, and enhance regulatory compliance. Supported by IRAP funding, TFF’s initiative will strengthen Canada’s food manufacturing sector by advancing AI-powered automation and smart monitoring technologies.

This project will test hypotheses and experiment with new mechanisms to design (or optimize) a repeatable and scalable business process, which may result in new business methods related to inventory management.

Participation in the ITEA PO Days held in Estoril, Portugal, Sept 15-19, 2025. Delegation led by the National Research Council of Canada Industrial Research Assistance Program (NRC IRAP) to establish relationships with key customers, end-users, and other international firms, which will help set the stage for potential Canadian projects in the upcoming Eureka ITEA Cluster call for proposals.
