This 36-month project with the Native Women’s Resource Centre of Toronto will develop and implement promising practices that will include online/offline resources and community approaches to advance knowledge and enhance empowerment supports for Indigenous women and gender diverse peoples with intellectual and cognitive disabilities who are at-risk of, are currently experiencing, and/or have survived human trafficking.

This will be achieved by reconvening the Community Working Group with the addition of a Lived Experience Advisor; performing Community-Based Research, including conducting an Environmental Scan and holding Community Discussion Groups with key stakeholders (including people with lived experience); and developing resources for promising practices and a community strategy that responds to the identified needs of these vulnerable populations.

At the end of the project, the organization will have examined the nature of trafficking experiences; developed culturally appropriate and disability sensitive online/offline resources; and implemented a community strategy.

The project will include an external evaluation that will look at the success and scalability of the promising practices.

This will be achieved by establishing and consulting a Survivors’ Advisory Committee; collaborating with community agencies; providing survivors and victims of trafficking with supports to assist them in accessing the criminal justice system, victim compensation/other funding, and therapy or resources, and in taking social justice action to help recover and heal. This will also be achieved by developing resources to share with other service providers to help victims of human trafficking.

Canada’s contribution to the Trust Fund aims to support the implementation of the peace agreement and the restoration of state authority in northern Mali. It also aims to strengthen social cohesion with the goal of reducing inter and intra community tensions, improving the protection of civilians and contributing to security in northern and central Mali. The Trust Fund for Peace and Security in Mali provides support to Malian-led efforts to resolve the crisis and supports the implementation of the Algiers Peace Process signed in July 2015 by the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA). Progress in implementing the key provisions of the Algiers Agreement has been slow, in particular due to ongoing insecurity and armed resistance. The ongoing instability in Mali has significant impacts on the entire Sahel region.

In this project, we will explore printed fabric sensors for reliable concurrent electrochemical and surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy measurements of stress biomarkers in sweat as an early marker for post-traumatic stress disorder. Quantification of the sensor performance will be carried out to underpin end-user acceptance. Reliable real-time sensing and physiological monitoring technologies would have a broad impact on the daily lives of Canadians.

Point-of-care (POC) diagnostics has the central aim of providing accurate and rapid identification of disease during the first clinical visit, thereby reducing loss-to-follow up and lowering costs within the healthcare system. While this field is ever-growing, there is a need for real-time, continuous monitoring of human health, which can be accomplished using wearable devices. While wearable devices which monitor physical parameters (heart rate, blood pressure) exist already, wearable sensors which monitor chemical biomarkers in bodily fluids have yet to be commercially developed. In this research, we will advance our already successful fabric-based plasmonic electrode chip technology towards the end goal of detection of human health biomarkers in sweat, a "headband of the future". Specifically, we will focus on identifying elevated levels of stress biomarkers in an effort to reduce the occurrence of post-traumatic stress disorder for certain occupations, including military personnel and front-line health care workers.

The Habitat StewardshipProgram (HSP) contributes to the recovery of endangered, threatened, and other species of concern, by engaging Canadians in conservation actions to benefit wildlife to protect aquaticspecies at risk.
