About this information
In June 2016, as part of the Open Government Action Plan, the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat (TBS) committed to increasing the transparency and usefulness of grants and contribution data and subsequently launched the Guidelines on the Reporting of Grants and Contributions Awards, effective April 1, 2018.
The rules and principles governing government grants and contributions are outlined in the Treasury Board Policy on Transfer Payments. Transfer payments are transfers of money, goods, services or assets made from an appropriation to individuals, organizations or other levels of government, without the federal government directly receiving goods or services in return, but which may require the recipient to provide a report or other information subsequent to receiving payment. These expenditures are reported in the Public Accounts of Canada. The major types of transfer payments are grants, contributions and \'other transfer payments\'.
Included in this category, but not to be reported under proactive disclosure of awards, are (1) transfers to other levels of government such as Equalization payments as well as Canada Health and Social Transfer payments. (2) Grants and contributions reallocated or otherwise redistributed by the recipient to third parties; and (3) information that would normally be withheld under the Access to Information Act and the Privacy Act.

Project Grant - Priority Announcement - Breast Cancer Survivorship

The CIHR Institute of Cancer Research (CIHR-ICR) has a mandate to support research that reduces the burden of cancer on individuals and families through prevention strategies, screening, diagnosis, effective treatments, psycho-social support systems, and palliation.
This PA will fund Breast Cancer research in the following priority areas:
• General Breast Cancer Research
o research that supports CIHR-ICR’s mandate in the area of Breast Cancer.
• Breast Cancer Prevention and/or Early Detection of Breast Cancer
o research that prevents the onset of breast cancer (lowers cancer risk) and/or reduces the severity of the disease through early detection when it is at its most treatable.
• Breast Cancer Survivorship
o research that mitigates the challenges experienced along the breast cancer survivorship journey and improves the health outcomes for breast cancer survivors of all ages after cancer treatment ends.
o specifically in the areas of:
¿ Late and long-term effects of cancer treatment
¿ Survivors’ experiences and outcomes
¿ Models of care for cancer survivorship
o This PA will not fund research focused on improving end-of-life care.
• This PA supports research that creates new knowledge and/or moves it into practice in the health system, communities, workplaces, and in the daily lives of Canadians.

Extension to Indigenous Chairs in Nursing

The Indigenous Research Chair in Nursing initiative supports nurses of both Indigenous and non-Indigenous ancestry to conduct research in Indigenous Health Nursing, furthering the development of knowledge and best and wise practices in the area of nursing practice, education, research and administration. In 2019, following the Chair: Indigenous Research Chairs in Nursing competition, six Chairs across Canada (Quebec, British Columbia, Saskatchewan, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Manitoba) were granted $985,000 over five years in funding. With additional funds now available, CIHR has decided to extend the funding to these Chairs through directed grants. The total amount available is six (6) grants of $200,000 each, with a funding start date of October 1, 2025, to September 30, 2026. This funding will support the continuation of their research as Indigenous Research Chairs in Nursing, while CIHR undertakes the work for the relaunch of this initiative.

Project Grant - Priority Announcement: Infection and Immunity

The CIHR Institute of Infection and Immunity (CIHR-III) will fund applications that are determined to be specifically relevant to its mandate and its 2021-2026 Strategic Plan, with a primary focus on biomedical research in which the objective and aims are directed towards building foundational knowledge in immunology and/or infectious diseases.
This Priority Announcement will prioritize funding for research in the following research areas:
• Infection:
o Zoonotic or vector-borne transmission of pathogens in the context of Global Climate Change;
o Understanding functional genomics and/or molecular epidemiology of emerging/re-emerging pathogens;
o Resistance to fungal infections and/or the role of bacteriophages in combatting antimicrobial resistance (AMR).
• Immunity:
o Immune mechanisms involved in the development of trained innate immunity;
o Immune mechanisms involved in the development and maintenance of tissue-specific immunity;
o Metabolic regulation of immune cells and processes (immunometabolism).
Should there be no eligible applications relevant to the research areas identified above, III will fund applications that are relevant to its mandate and its 2021-2026 Strategic Plan, with a primary focus on biomedical research in which the objective and aims are directed towards building foundational knowledge in immunology and/or infectious diseases.
