About this information
In June 2016, as part of the Open Government Action Plan, the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat (TBS) committed to increasing the transparency and usefulness of grants and contribution data and subsequently launched the Guidelines on the Reporting of Grants and Contributions Awards, effective April 1, 2018.
The rules and principles governing government grants and contributions are outlined in the Treasury Board Policy on Transfer Payments. Transfer payments are transfers of money, goods, services or assets made from an appropriation to individuals, organizations or other levels of government, without the federal government directly receiving goods or services in return, but which may require the recipient to provide a report or other information subsequent to receiving payment. These expenditures are reported in the Public Accounts of Canada. The major types of transfer payments are grants, contributions and \'other transfer payments\'.
Included in this category, but not to be reported under proactive disclosure of awards, are (1) transfers to other levels of government such as Equalization payments as well as Canada Health and Social Transfer payments. (2) Grants and contributions reallocated or otherwise redistributed by the recipient to third parties; and (3) information that would normally be withheld under the Access to Information Act and the Privacy Act.

The 43rd Committee on Space Research (COSPAR) Scientific Assembly is a conference with the objective of promoting scientific research in space on an international level, with emphasis on the exchange of results, information and opinions. This conference, hosted as a hybrid event (both in-person and virtual) in Sydney, Australia from January 28 to February 4, 2021, provides a forum for the discussion of problems that may affect scientific space research. Postsecondary students attending this conference are offered a unique opportunity to deepen their knowledge of space science, develop their international networks, and present their research at a well-established and prestigious forum to a respected audience. Under the Canadian Student Participation in the COSPAR Scientific Assembly Announcement of Opportunity (AO), and as part of its commitment to support the development of the next generation of space professionals in Canada, the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) awarded grants to graduate students (master's and doctoral) to participate in this assembly. The grant provided financial support to the student to cover the registration fees associated with their virtual participation in COSPAR.

This Project will include collaborative R&D to expand equipment and complete research on products which can be produced using atypical fermentation. In support of the PIC Supercluster, the project will explore new markets and applications for total pulse production by evaluating the utility of pulse starch as an alternative fermentation feedstock to produce higher value products. In support of the Oceans Supercluster, the project will explore cost-effective approaches to fermentation using marine anaerobic bacteria as novel sources of ingredients in the lucrative cosmetic and personal care market. The ultimate goal of the Project is to address gaps in Canada’s R&D infrastructure to build critical mass in atypical fermentation.

Even conceptually simple problems can be difficult to solve. To motivate this project, consider a system of particles of type A and type B that are thoroughly mixed in a closed box. They are moving around at a rate dictated by the temperature (ie, diffusion). At some time, the type A particles start to bond together to form chains (ie, polymers). The question is: what does the system look like after a long time?
It turns out that there are several answers to this question. If the particles move around a rate much faster than the polymerization rate, then as the polymers of type A are formed the type B monomers will move away from the polymers. Hence, after a long time, the monomers of type B will be in a separate section of the box than the type A polymers. Conversely, if the polymerization rate is fast compared to the rate of diffusion, then type B monomers can be trapped in the network of type A polymers.
Computer simulations are ideally suited to solve such problems since the system can be evolved in time as dictated by known physical laws and particular sets of parameters (e.g., diffusion/ polymerization rates). The end simulation state can be analyzed and characterized. For example, we can quantify the purity of the separation of A and B particles. Performing the simulation and analysis across different parameters then allows us to reveal trends of how the final state depends on those parameters. This knowledge can be used to guide experiments that desire to achieve a particular final state. In this project, this fundamental knowledge will contribute to a larger project of designing new materials with particular properties.
