To strengthen responses to drug and substance use issues in Canada.

March 2021 - The ongoing intra-Afghan conflict, natural disasters, the uncertain political landscape and displacement dynamics continue to fuel high humanitarian needs in Afghanistan. In 2021, an estimated 18.4 million people require humanitarian assistance, with primary sectors of concern including health, food security, and protection.

With GAC’s support, the International Rescue Committee addresses the urgent needs of approximately 4,800 people in three Afghan provinces. This project focuses on improving the protective and legal environment for women and girls in emergencies by providing life-saving protection services. Project activities include: (1) providing case management and referrals to women clients in emergency settings; (2) conducting legal awareness-raising, counselling and information sessions; and (3) supporting the training of trainers to improve access to justice and services for women affected by emergencies.

March 2021 - An estimated 13.4 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance and protection across Sudan as a result of armed conflict, food insecurity, malnutrition, economic decline and disease.

January 2021 - The International Committee of the Red Cross’ (ICRC) primary mission is to help protect people’s lives and dignity affected by conflict and other violent situation. The ICRC assists and prevents further suffering by promoting and strengthening international humanitarian law and universal humanitarian principles.

With GAC’s support, the Emergency Drawdown Fund promotes early, effective, and timely humanitarian actions to respond to sudden-onset crises of significant humanitarian proportions, mainly through the provision of life-saving activities such as health care, protection services, emergency shelter, including water, sanitation and hygiene services. This new funding mechanism enables the organization to be more responsive and timely in response to sudden-onset crisis to save more lives while minimizing transaction costs.

Project activities include: (1) providing medical care, access to water and sanitation facilities, food assistance and livelihoods support; (2) providing Red Cross/Red Crescent National Societies with technical expertise to strengthen their capacity in areas such as promoting international humanitarian law, restoring family links, and delivering relief in situations of armed conflict and violence; and (3) ensuring that international humanitarian law is respected in the treatment of detainees and civilians not taking part in hostilities.

December 2020 - During conflicts, natural disasters and other complex emergencies, sexual and reproductive health (SRH) needs must not be overlooked. It is essential to ensure that life-saving interventions related to SRH services, and protection from and response to sexual and gender-based violence are provided.

With GAC’s support, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) is contributing to meeting the SRH needs of vulnerable populations, particularly women and girls. Project activities include: (1) providing emergency obstetric, SRH services; (2) preventing, mitigating and responding to gender-based violence, including psychosocial support; and (3) strengthening humanitarian operations and capacity, including boosting supply chain and logistics management.

February 2021 - Prior to the outbreak of conflict in the Tigray region in late 2020, Ethiopia was already facing ongoing acute humanitarian need, arising from sporadic but widespread intercommunal conflict, regional drought and flooding, swarms of desert locusts, the economic pressure of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the impact of hosting nearly 800,000 refugees throughout the country. Together, these crises have led to widespread food insecurity, high levels of acute malnutrition, and significant population displacement. Although ongoing fighting and other access restrictions have hindered full needs assessments in Tigray, an estimated 29 million people in Ethiopia are likely to require humanitarian assistance in 2021.

With GAC’s support, CARE is preventing and treating acute malnutrition, improving access to safe water and sanitation, and helping households to meet essential needs amongst internally displaced persons and host communities in Ethiopia’s drought- and conflict-affected Somali region. Project activities include: (1) identifying and treating acute malnutrition; (2) rehabilitating water points and distributing sanitation and hygiene related non-food items; and, (3) providing unconditional cash grants to crisis-affected households.

The peace that followed a long and deadly civil war in Sri Lanka is fragile, and conflict over ethno-religious divides is rising. This project supports women and marginalized groups in community-based efforts to promote social cohesion and community resilience in Sri Lanka. Through small grants, networking and skills development, the Asia Foundation promotes civil society’s role in protecting and maintaining space for inter-communal engagement and local approaches to build trust and confidence for genuine reconciliation.
