Kwanlin Dün First Nation (KDFN) will develop and deliver a Family Courtworker (ICW) Pilot Project to expand culturally informed support for Indigenous individuals involved in the family law and child protection systems.

The objective of the Indigenous Courtwork Program is to facilitate and enhance access to justice by assisting Indigenous Persons (adults and youth) charged with an offence under any federal or provincial statute, municipal by-law, or otherwise involved in the criminal justice system to obtain fair, just, equitable and culturally relevant treatment. These services include information on charges, court procedures, rights and responsibilities, bail, diversion, restorative justice and Indigenous community justice alternatives; support in accessing legal resources as well as appropriate community programming including wellness, trauma, housing, family and employment services; and, facilitating communication among court officials, accused persons, family members and communities to ensure understanding and collaboration

This project will support a one-time initiative to plan to provide travel support to enable 7 Indigenous Courtworkers from Manitoba to attend the Indigenous Courtwork Program National Gathering and related meetings March 4-8, 2019 in Ottawa, Ontario. The National Gathering of Indigenous Courtworkers will provide an opportunity to build on existing partnerships by sharing information and best practices in support of the Indigenous Courtwork Program mandate and objectives. The gathering will provide an opportunity for networking in support of skill building and capacity development for Courtworkers.

This project aims to measure the benefits of Indigenous Courtworker services by supporting preparatory work for a multi-jurisdictional study of the impact of Indigenous Courtworkers in Canada.

The Native Counselling Services of Alberta (NCSA) Family Courtworker Program: Updating to Best Practice project will focus on updating the practices and approaches for family courtworkers outlined in the Family Courtwork Manual, The Firelight Group will facilitate discussions, review and update core documents and provide training on the updated practices for approximately 25 family courtworkers. The materials will be made available to other Indigenous Courtwork programs across Canada.

The Aboriginal Family Courtworker Training project, will gather seven new and experienced family courtworkers from Ft. Qu'appelle, Yorkton, North Battleford, Onion Lake, Regina, Prince Albert and Saskatoon to conduct specific and focused Family Courtworker Training from October 18-19, 2022 in Saskatoon, SK.

The Government of Yukon will work with 14 Yukon First Nations to build a family courtwork delivery model including a training manual and job description. The project will consist of a jurisdictional scan of other family courtwork programs, one in person meeting with a member of each community and other justice stakeholders, as well as a series of regular calls to ensure collaboration throughout the territory.
