Grants and Contributions

The Project Grant program is expected to:
• Support a diverse portfolio of health-related research and knowledge translation proposals at any stage, from discovery to application, including commercialization;
• Promote relevant collaborations across disciplines, professions, and sectors; and
• Contribute to the creation and use of health-related knowledge

The CIHR Institute of Infection and Immunity (CIHR-III) has a mandate to support research,build research capacity and mobilize knowledge in the areas of infectious disease and the body's immune system. This priority announcement has a primary focus on biomedical research in which the objective and aims are directed towards building foundational knowledge in immunology and/or infectious diseases. Funding will be provided for applications that specifically align with III’s mandate and one or more of the following priority areas:

• Infection:
o Zoonotic or vector-borne transmission of pathogens in the context of Global Climate Change;
o Understanding functional genomics and/or molecular epidemiology of emerging/re-emerging pathogens;
o Resistance to fungal infections and/or the role of bacteriophages in combatting antimicrobial resistance.
• Immunity:
o Immune mechanisms involved in the development of trained innate immunity;
o Immune mechanisms involved in the development and maintenance of tissue-specific immunity;
o Metabolic regulation of immune cells and processes (immunometabolism).

Should there be no eligible applications relevant to the Priority Areas, applications that are relevant to the priority announcement but that fall outside of the Priority Areas would be funded.

The CIHR Institute of Infection and Immunity (CIHR-III) will offer funding to support early career researchers (ECR) in the fields of infection and immunity.

CIHR-III will award multi-year grants to applications that are determined to be specifically relevant to the CIHR-III broad mandate to support research, build research capacity and mobilize knowledge in the areas of infectious disease and the body's immune system.

The CIHR Institute of Musculoskeletal Health and Arthritis (CIHR-IMHA) will fund applications that are determined relevant to its mandate and research priority areas as described below:

• Myalgic Encephalomyelitis
• Oral Health

Dr. Menten's outstanding career as a biomedical scientist led to many achievements including important co-discoveries relating to blood sugar, haemoglobin and kidney functions. In 1913, a collaboration with Leonor Michaelis on the behaviour of enzymes resulted in the Michaelis-Menten equation, a biochemical concept so fundamental that it is familiar to first-year science students.
This Maud Menten New Principal Investigator Prize was established to recognize and support the research excellence of Canadian Early-Career Investigators working within the mandate of the CIHR Institute of Genetics (CIHR-IG).
This prize is a supplemental grant to support research and must be used according to the CIHR Grants and Awards Guide. The prize is not a personal award and is non-renewable.

• The CIHR Institute of Cancer Research (CIHR-ICR) has a mandate to support research that reduces the burden of cancer on individuals and families through prevention strategies, screening, diagnosis, effective treatments, psycho-social support systems, and palliation.
• This priority announcement (PA) is designed to support research that mitigates the challenges experienced along the cancer survivorship journey and improves the health outcomes for cancer survivors of all ages from the time of their cancer diagnosis until the time of their death or entry into end-of-life care. This PA will not fund research focused on improving end-of-life care.
• This PA supports research that creates new knowledge in cancer survivorship and/or moves it into practice in the health system, communities, and in the daily lives of Canadians.
• This PA will fund research in the following areas:
o Late & Long-Term Effects
o Survivors’ Experiences & Outcomes
o Models of Care

The Centre for Research on Pandemic Preparedness and Health Emergencies (CRPPHE) is housed at CIHR with a mandate to grow Canada’s research leadership in preparedness, prevention, response, and recovery from pandemics and public health emergencies, including by building and supporting Canadian research capacity in the field.

CRPPHE will offer multi-year funding to support projects that are aligned with the CRPPHE mandate and which has a primary research objective related to preparing for and/or responding to existing and future pandemics and other health emergencies* in the following research areas:

• Patient-oriented research, which refers to a continuum of research that engages patients as partners, focusses on patient-identified priorities and improves patient outcomes. This research, conducted by multidisciplinary teams in partnership with relevant stakeholders, aims to apply the knowledge generated to improve healthcare systems and practices;
• Indigenous Health Research which is research that is conducted by, grounded in, or engaged with, First Nations, Inuit or Métis communities, societies or individuals and their wisdom, cultures, experiences or knowledge systems, as expressed in their dynamic forms, past and present; and/or
• Community-centered Action Research which involves community members in all stages of the research process—from the very beginning to define the research question. This ensures relevance to the community, capacity-building, and integration of community members in conducting the research; it also promotes active participation in the development and implementation of the dissemination strategy. In addition to these principles, community-based research maintains the same level of methodological rigour and ethical review as other research approaches.

The specific objectives of this funding opportunity are to:

• Strengthen and build capacity within communities for CBR and KM that delivers impactful, useful, and timely results for populations at greatest risk of STBBI in Canada;
• Advance community-centred approaches to STBBI research by establishing meaningful partnerships between communities and researchers from academic or other research institutions; and
• Improve health equity by conducting, enabling and/or facilitating access to research that addresses structural, social, behavioural, and biomedical determinants of health for key populations affected by STBBI.
