In June 2016, as part of the Open Government Action Plan, the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat (TBS) committed to increasing the transparency and usefulness of grants and contribution data and subsequently launched the Guidelines on the Reporting of Grants and Contributions Awards, effective April 1, 2018.

The rules and principles governing government grants and contributions are outlined in the Treasury Board Policy on Transfer Payments. Transfer payments are transfers of money, goods, services or assets made from an appropriation to individuals, organizations or other levels of government, without the federal government directly receiving goods or services in return, but which may require the recipient to provide a report or other information subsequent to receiving payment. These expenditures are reported in the Public Accounts of Canada. The major types of transfer payments are grants, contributions and \'other transfer payments\'.

Included in this category, but not to be reported under proactive disclosure of awards, are (1) transfers to other levels of government such as Equalization payments as well as Canada Health and Social Transfer payments. (2) Grants and contributions reallocated or otherwise redistributed by the recipient to third parties; and (3) information that would normally be withheld under the Access to Information Act and the Privacy Act.

This 44-month project with Hiatus House will develop and implement promising practices that will entail the development of guidelines and tools to help shelter professionals and allied partners working with survivors of Human Trafficking to advance knowledge and enhance empowerment supports to non-status, refugee, immigrant and racialized women.

This will be achieved by hiring a project coordinator; conducting literature review and developing, implementing and disseminating of guidance and tools to screen, assess, and intervene effectively with survivors as they access shelter services. The project will foster partnerships with key stakeholders and include the voice of people with lived experience.

At the end of the project, the organization will have advanced knowledge and developed effective interventions to help survivors of human trafficking.

The project will include an external evaluation that will look at the success and scalability of the promising practices.

Genome sequencing of wild Solanum diploids

The objective of this project is to sequence the genomes of wild Solanum diploid species derived from the CIP gene bank, with the goal of comparing these wild species sequences against genomes from cultivated potato to find genomic regions harboring genes conferring traits beneficial to the Canadian potato industry including resistance to diseases and pests, improved processing and quality traits, tolerance to abiotic stress including temperature extremes and drought. The project will build resources for use in guiding potato germplasm enhancement in breeding and further advance a potato web portal for scientists to mine and utilize the data generated here and from past projects.
