This project aims to ensure access to high-quality family planning (FP) and comprehensive abortion care (CAC) services for the poorest and most underserved women and girls in 11 of Ghana’s 16 regions. This project focuses on reaching some of the poorest and most underserved women and girls in the country, within the Central, Northern, North East and Savannah regions. This project also contributes to strengthens their decision-making power on issues that affect their health.

Project activities include: (1) supporting local advocacy efforts that call to strengthen policies and guidelines related to sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) services in Ghana, including the adoption of SRHR education in schools and the national rollout of FP services as part of the National Health Insurance Scheme benefit package; (2) strengthening the capacity of the Government of Ghana to provide strong policy leadership and meet the increasing demand for SRHR services via its public health care system; and (3) supporting a national youth-focused campaign on Heath and FP.

This project expects to directly benefit 200,000 women and girls by providing them access to high quality, rights-based and client-centred FP and CAC services.

January 2021 - In 2021, approximately 235 million people across the world will be in need of humanitarian assistance and protection in part due to ongoing conflicts, natural disasters, and disease outbreaks.

With GAC’s support, Canadian Lutheran World Relief and its local partner, Lutheran World Federation Myanmar, improve access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) facilities, non-food items and shelter for internally displaced people (IDPs) and host communities in central Rakhine State, Myanmar. This project also addresses protection and social cohesion issues. Project activities include: (1) installing community water filters; (2) distributing WASH and dignity kits; (3) re-constructing longhouses in a safer, more dignified and gender-responsive manner; (4) providing training on leadership and rights-based empowerment to women, adolescent girls and girls; and (5) conducting awareness-raising sessions on sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) and gender-based violence.

With GAC’s support, Development and Peace and its local partner, Caritas Bangladesh, provide safe shelters and secure settlements to Rohingya refugees in Cox’s Bazar, using a community-based approach. Project activities include: (1) providing training on shelter construction, maintenance and upgrade to refugee households; (2) distributing construction materials and providing technical assistance; (3) facilitating community groups to develop site improvement action plans; and (4) undertaking site improvement works.

The project will use satellite, model, and ground-based data to characterise the extent and variability of mineral dust aerosol (MDA) in the atmosphere above northern Canada, and identify the sources from which it is emitted at the surface. The impact of MDA on the radiation budget and clouds – both important components of the climate system – will be quantified, as will its contribution to air quality indicators. The project also involves validation of several Canadian-led/partnered satellite-based systems that measure aerosol and cloud properties.

The boreal biome constitutes an integral component of the climate system. Our limited quantitative understanding of coupled carbon and water fluxes hampers reliably predicting the boreal biome response to projected increases in disturbance frequency and intensity. This project will enhance the ecological realism of the boreal biome in a terrestrial biosphere model (CLASSIC).

In this proposal, we will combine satellite measurements and a high-resolution model to address two questions about Canadian air quality and greenhouse gas emissions: 1. How well can satellite measurements of carbon monoxide (CO) constrain Boreal forest fire emissions and improve the current state-of-the-art Boreal fire emissions models? 2. How well can satellite measurements of methane (CH4) reduce uncertainty on Canada's anthropogenic methane emissions?

New developments in this project will be directly transferrable to the ECCC Prediction System.

Recently, we developed a novel evaporation model that characterizes land-atmosphere feedback processes. In this project, we will adapt this model to satellite land dryness observations, allowing us to estimate evapotranspiration across Canada and globally, and investigate physical mechanisms inducing drier climate.

The project develops a new Earth system analytical model “CAN-TG” which utilises satellite data from a number of Canadian sensors or missions to predict carbon and moisture dynamics of key Canadian terrestrial ecosystems, including wetlands and at the northern tree line. Key strengths of new model is its fine spatial and temporal scale and its verification using existing Canadian datasets. This project has been developed as a collaboration between academia, the Canadian Forest Service and Environment and Climate Change Canada.
