Grants and Contributions

About this information

In June 2016, as part of the Open Government Action Plan, the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat (TBS) committed to increasing the transparency and usefulness of grants and contribution data and subsequently launched the Guidelines on the Reporting of Grants and Contributions Awards, effective April 1, 2018.

The rules and principles governing government grants and contributions are outlined in the Treasury Board Policy on Transfer Payments. Transfer payments are transfers of money, goods, services or assets made from an appropriation to individuals, organizations or other levels of government, without the federal government directly receiving goods or services in return, but which may require the recipient to provide a report or other information subsequent to receiving payment. These expenditures are reported in the Public Accounts of Canada. The major types of transfer payments are grants, contributions and \'other transfer payments\'.

Included in this category, but not to be reported under proactive disclosure of awards, are (1) transfers to other levels of government such as Equalization payments as well as Canada Health and Social Transfer payments. (2) Grants and contributions reallocated or otherwise redistributed by the recipient to third parties; and (3) information that would normally be withheld under the Access to Information Act and the Privacy Act.

Agreement:

Automated material synthesis using deep reinforced learning

Agreement Number:

969508

Duration: from Mar 25, 2021 to Apr 30, 2024
Description:

This Project will develop new machine learning algorithms for automating aspects of physical chemistry by discovering new pathways for creating materials with desired properties. The goal is to use the framework of reinforcement learning as a means of discovering, controlling, and optimizing the production of new materials. This Project will explore a novel new direction to perform decision making associated with established but highly complex processes used to transform one chemical compound into another.

Development of transfer learning methods for diagnostic application of lipido/metabolomics

Agreement Number:

969644

Duration: from Mar 25, 2021 to Feb 29, 2024
Description:

This Project is a collaboration between NRC and the University of Victoria (UVic) to develop Transfer Learning methods that utilize a large dataset for healthy patients with the aim of developing a model for the analysis of smaller patient populations. In this way, it will provide a base model for early personalized-diagnosis that is accurate across different patient subpopulations. The Project will focus on two neurodegenerative diseases - Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease.

Agreement:

Latex agglutination tests for rapid, instrument-free COVID-19 diagnostics in saliva (Phase 2)

Agreement Number:

969766

Duration: from Mar 25, 2021 to Sep 9, 2021
Description:

The Project is to optimize unique latex agglutination tests (LATs) for the detection of SARS-CoV-2 virus in saliva in an inexpensive "chewable diagnostic" format. The LATs for SARS-CoV-2 are to be performed in a single step, with the aim that the results will be readable by visual inspection, with the potential for automated readout via a smart-phone. By the end of this Project, LATs implemented in the chewable cartridge format will have been developed, optimized, and evaluated in a pilot scale clinical trial.
