In June 2016, as part of the Open Government Action Plan, the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat (TBS) committed to increasing the transparency and usefulness of grants and contribution data and subsequently launched the Guidelines on the Reporting of Grants and Contributions Awards, effective April 1, 2018.
The rules and principles governing government grants and contributions are outlined in the Treasury Board Policy on Transfer Payments. Transfer payments are transfers of money, goods, services or assets made from an appropriation to individuals, organizations or other levels of government, without the federal government directly receiving goods or services in return, but which may require the recipient to provide a report or other information subsequent to receiving payment. These expenditures are reported in the Public Accounts of Canada. The major types of transfer payments are grants, contributions and \'other transfer payments\'.
Included in this category, but not to be reported under proactive disclosure of awards, are (1) transfers to other levels of government such as Equalization payments as well as Canada Health and Social Transfer payments. (2) Grants and contributions reallocated or otherwise redistributed by the recipient to third parties; and (3) information that would normally be withheld under the Access to Information Act and the Privacy Act.

Development of a composite lower frame for an agricultural vehicle track system

effman, a Canadian small enterprise, will collaborate with the NRC to investigate composite design and manufacturing processes that could meet the weight, load capability, durability and cost requirements needed for agricultural vehicles. For applicability and relevance, an actual agricultural structural component will be selected to conduct the design study, using real loading cases and requirements.
Various composite design concepts will be investigated (computer aided design (CAD) and finite element analysis (FEA)) in order to evaluate the potential of each for mass reduction while meeting load case requirements. A combination of different material systems (such as continuous and discontinuous reinforcements or glass and carbon reinforcements) will be considered, specifically regarding their ability to meet complex load cases as well as their manufacturability requirements. In parallel, a cost analysis of the most promising concepts will be done in order to evaluate their feasibility at an industrial level and from a business perspective (material and manufacturing costs versus component volume). From the FEA analysis, the most promising solutions will be identified and design and manufacturing guidelines will be established.
The Project will enable a better understanding of the advantages and limits of using composite materials for demanding applications such as agricultural equipment, and identify potential areas for future research and development activities in the agricultural field.

This project investigates extracellular electron transfer between the multilayer microbial community in acidophilic biofilms and the surface of sulfidic minerals. A meta-omic approach combined with surface mineralogy mapping and electrochemical measurements will provide new insights into sulfide oxidation processes in mine waste rock piles, and the resulting problem of acid rock drainage.

Rapid prototyping of micro optics by micro-tomographic 3D printing

Neurescence, located in Toronto, has a proprietary micro-endoscope technology for imaging and stimulation of the brain and the spinal cord. It’s mission is to help understand how the central nervous system works in healthy and diseased subjects to shed light on mechanisms of neurological diseases, such as Epilepsy, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s and Depression. The technology is then used to find efficacious treatments for these diseases. Micro-endoscopes use highly specialized miniature optical elements to form an image. The creation of these optics is a main goal of this project. Neurescence will design the specialized optics, and tests these optics created by NRC team using its microedoscope and provide feedback to the NRC team. Moreover, Neurescence’s team has extensive experience with creating and commercializing hardware and software products from prototype stage. This unique combination of technical and business expertise ensures the right steps are taken to commercialize the results of the project.

Developing safe and long-lasting Li-ion battery electrolytes for cold Canadian winters via real-time spectroelectrochemistry

High-concentration electrolytes (HCE) show enhanced chemical stability when applied in rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. These electrolytes can also be used as components of liquid-solid hybrid batteries to obtain a combination of improved battery performance and safety. Nevertheless, unwanted decomposition reaction occurring at the interface of HCE and battery electrode potentially hinders the application of HCE in lithium batteries. The goal of this project is to provide a comprehensive understanding of the interfacial reactions that are responsible for deteriorating performances. Our team will use our expertise in molecular spectroscopy and electrochemistry to directly approach the physicochemical properties of the interface from operating batteries. Results obtained from the research will inform the optimal choice of battery materials.
